Hello all,

just got off the phone with Verles and have an updated fishing report.  chum is good right now at the hoodsport hatchery.  allyn and the johns creek area are showing good silvers and triton cove is also producing silvers.

Great, I will be out there tomorrow. I'm thinking of heading to Allyn. Any tips on where to launch?
Thanks :icon_thumleft:

Z,

I have not launched out there myself yet but I have found 2 places that sound good.  in allyn there is a boat launch right in the middle of town.  it looks to be a good launch with a dock.  Someone in the other post about allyn mentioned the kayak park.  also the johns creek area has a public area and a beach to launch from.  I asked about it when I talked to verles and they mentioned tha the launch from there would have less current and you would not have to fight the narrows current.  but like I said I have not launched there yet,my daughter loves fishing at the hatchery and with the chum in I am hard pressed to get her to willingly go else where.

Thanks for the info HH. No worries about hooking up. If the daughter is set on the hatchery then go for it. No doubt if the fishing is good I'll be back w/ some others next weekend. ;)

Z

BTW found some pics and info on the launch and kayak park.

We went out today, the daughter and I, and had an amazing time.  Not very warm, but it was sunny and dry once the fog lifted.

^um, guess the cat really wanted some fish, you can just catch sight of his paws going for the tail of the fish.

Nice work HH. Looks like you guys had some fun.

My day was a bit of an adventure since it was the first time to that area. I was a bit sleepy on the way and missed some turns so took me about 2 hours to get to Allyn. It was foggy when I first got there so took my time getting ready. By the time I launched it cleared a bit and I headed for a river mouth I spotted on Google maps the day before. It was the spot because right when I got there I had a good amount of chums jumping. Tied on a green wollybugger and cast out. I didn't have an anchor w/ me :crybaby2: so was drifting pretty fast. About 10 casts later my first hookup. Fought hard and well them popped off. There's a one point barbless reg. now so it was tough. Hooked two more that got off when two boats and 4 shore fishermen showed. I went back to the launch and had lunch w/ the Mrs. and dog. By the time I launched the fog had cleared and it had warmed up a bit. I headed north to another smaller creek mouth this time. It was super shallow (1-5 ft.) pretty much the whole way and there was very little features to the bottom. I got all the way back towards the creek mouth and started to worry that there were any fish in there since the water was now 1-3 ft. all the way across the inlet which was at least 200 yards across. I paddled a bit more when I heard splashing behind me. The water was crystal and saw fish that were hanging out bolt away when my shadow disturbed them. As I noticed more jumping I saw that there were more steelhead jumping than salmon. There were even some bright fish jumping on this end so hurried to where most of the action was. Two casts into it a steelie absolutely hammers the bugger. It was a surface attack and the froth mixed w/ red and green showed it was a good sized buck. It dodged and weaved before going fully airborne and chucking the fly. Needless to say, I stayed there for the rest of the day and hooked about 3 more. I didn't land any which was really dissapointing but had a great time in a beautiful place. The inlet at Allyn is definitely a new fav! Anyone wanna hit it up again next weekend? ;D

Wish I could have joined you guys... saw the offer on Friday night and contemplated it, but decided to stick closer to home.

On the fish throwing your barbless hooks... trick is to keep constant pressure on them.  Keep the rod tip down and at an angle to the fish (sort of sideways).  Easier said than done, I know.

How do chum taste?

So a little more info about saturdays trip.  We launched out ot of the public morage in hood sport and paddled over to the hatchery it was pretty foggy but we stuck to the shore and made it pretty quick.  I started out with anchoives under a float but my bobber stops would not hold depth, I think I had to much wieght.  any way I switched to the spinning rod with the green calcutta shad I started getting hits,  I hooked six and brought in two,  I am good at the long line release!!  the fist one I brought in took us for quite a ride, but we figured it out and the second one only took about 10 minutes.  there were between 40-50 people fishing from the hatchery and I would say there was at least 2-3 fish on at any time.  the boats were archored on the north side of the hatchery, and were quite interested in the kayaks and watching me be towed around by my dinner.  lessons learned:  need an anchor we would only get 5-6 casts before we drifted past the "good" area.  There was just a ripple on the water so anchoring would have been safe and we could have stayed in position. As for taste I will tell you in a day or two when I am done smoking it ;D

Z, I'm going to guess that those were cohos you were seeing.  Where were some recent reports of coho up in the shallows in this area.

Yeah it could have been. Coho female's spawning colors are really similar to that of a steelie. But then again, I am no expert and it is a bit early for the steel. Most likely you're right. ;D
