Conditions look excellent this weekend: low tidal flow, calm seas. Will probably go both saturday and sunday if I can pull it off.

Bottom fishing is always fun but salmon is an option.

PM me if you're interested in coming along

Have fun out there Conehead!

Picked up some kone zones to do some trolling with spinners/hoochies/cut plugs. I'm thinking of trolling at dawn somewhere between buoys 4,6,8. Or would it be better to launch from Johns River and troll in the middle of the bay? All advice/suggestions are appreciated.

but bottomfishing is really tempting too...

There are more user-friendly options too if less adventurous/experienced anglers want to come along, anyone who has safety gear, a kayak and knows at least basic paddle strokes. There are surf-shops in Westport that rent surfing wet-suits which work pretty well for kayaking, if outwear is needed.

Too bad the Chinook Fishery inside the harbor isnt on.  That was a great fishery.  If you don't need to retain any fish, they will be much more accessible and usually sheltered fishing launching out of Johns River and hanging a right up the channel.  Fishing the edges of the south channel always produced.  Kings more often than silvers though.

But if you want fish, I think the quota is about to run out.  Other boards talk about the salmon fishing closing after this weekend.

Oh, and I screwed up the last time I think.  I have caught fish within Kayak distance SOUTH of the westport jetty.  Never have seen too many boats near shore by the Ocean Shore side.

Thanks for the advice yet again.

Looks like Willapa Bay is the place to try for Salmon.

That is if I can drag myself away from bottomfishing....

Ack. Conehead is right.  Would not want to advise people to fish closed waters.  I was thinking mid August for some reason...

Off for some bottom fishing tomorrow. I'm bringing my GoPro to record some of the action.

Off for some bottom fishing tomorrow. I'm bringing my GoPro to record some of the action.

Went out in the fog and promptly broke my 6'6" Ugly Stick after only a few casts  :-[. The rod broke as I was reaching back to pull some more line from the spool with light drag set, I couldn't believe it snapped from so little force!! I think I captured the rod breaking on the GoPro though, will post in a bit.

I didn't bring a backup rod so it was more of bird-watching than a fishing trip, oh well.

Note to self: always bring spare rod/reel combo.
