Hey yakkers
Has anyone launched at hobuck beach on the pacific side of flattery? It seems like this would be a far better launch spot then the neah bay marina to fish tatoosh. Distance wise it should save time plus there are fishing options both north and south.
Last time I was there there was a rolling swell that prevented me from getting past the surf. I actually didn't even try. But beyond that the seas were way down.
I have wheels for my outback. Is the river to the south a possibility?
Sure would be convenient considering I like to stay at that campsite.
Any ideas.

Tatoosh Island is quite a few miles from Hobuck by kayak and theres lots of fishing action in Makah bay just in front of Hobuck beach. Tons of nearshore and offshore reefs to explore within a few miles. Yes there is surf which is a hazard but its a lotta fun if you know what you are doing. In addition to the bottomfish, I've seen quite a few jumpers just outside the surf, but never had salmon gear deployed.

I am headed there later this week!

Do a search on Hobuck.  You'll be glad you did.
It's been a staple of many Washington kayak fishers this year.
Fungunnin has been the driving force behind bringing this spot to the attention of the masses.

A nice spot when the conditions allow. Very similar to La Push that way. Unfortunately that's a big caveat. The surf is an issue but it's also very exposed and conditions change very quickly. I know quite a few salty kayak fishermen that have found themselves in some trouble out there. If it were on a ski resort I'd label it a double black diamond.

I would not recommend targeting Tatoosh from Hobuck. It is a long paddle and once outside of Makah Bay you are VERY exposed with no plan B. I am sure it can be done but the WX would have to be perfect and I would recommend you are back by early afternoon.
Hobuck is great and there is tons of good fishing to be had you just have to be careful. Right now there is a 18.5 foot swell at 11 seconds. BE CAREFUL!!!

There is no Hobuck, these aren't the fishing spots you're looking for   ;)

Quite often people post up when they are heading out there.  It will be very difficult to find fishable days this time of year, but you never know!

just some rough water kayaking

i don't think the tatoosh area would be much fun when it looks like this (may 2005.... pictures don't do justice for how big it was... bigger than current forecast)

Yeah that's a bad spot to get jammed up in for sure. I've been out there when it's nice and when it the swell is stacked up during the ebb... Each time however I was in an ocean going tug.
I'll probably head out that way sometime this winter but will end up fishing ozette. Ill keep an eye on the weather though and I might get lucky.
Thanks again guy fellas

I've been curious about ozette as a sort of plan b when the salt is too hairy. But i've never talked to anyone that's fished there, much less from a kayak. What kind of fish can be caught there?

Well I am by no means an expert on lake ozette but I have fished it a few times from a kayak.
I have caught a handful of cutthroat trout and squawfish. Usually I tend to fish near the mouth of the river at the boat launch and the western shore. I've tried a few lures including dick nite, wedding ring, and roostertail.
Ive caught the majority of fish on a white roostertail.

I have seen salmon swimming in the creek when crossing the bridge to the cape alava. I doubt they are legal to catch but they are certainly in the lake at times.
Also I believe only single barbless artificial lures are the only thing allowed.
Good luck and give the roostertail a shot

the salmon are sockeye and they are listed under the endangered species act.  definitely not open.
