I was reading an earlier post about the difference between the Outback and the Pro Angler.  I love my PA but understand the appeal of the Outback.  I am 6'5" and 275 lbs. and use all of the space afforded to me in the PA.
I did try fly fishing  for Pinks on the Skykomish and felt comfortable standing up on the PA in slack water.
I bought the Evolve because I had budgeted for a power boat and thought having the motor as an option on the PA would be cool.  All in with the Evolve, sailing kit, bed extender,  and other rigging I saved money from buying a power boat.  The PA offers me more versatility and has been more fun than I expected.
The Evolve is an amazing piece of technology and I look forward to adding a solar option to charge the battery next Spring.  One negative is the noise of the motor. When fishing mid-week whether in a river or in the Sound, the peace and quiet of the Mirage drive can't be beat.  Fishing the Skykomish with salmon jumping as the sun rises trolling with the Mirage was one of my best days ever.  I recently fish the same area using the Evolve and while I was able to have more range and options fishing, the high pitch roar of the motor made me want to scream after a five hours.  It has been invaluable in allowing me to fish down wind on Lake Washington with the Mirage drive and then using it to hustle back against the wind in time to make a appointments.

Do you have to register your kayak if your gonna have an Evolve?

I was wondering if you would need to register your kayak if you put a sail on it.

I don't plan to and only use the Evolve part of the time.  I would rather have a NWKA logo on my PA then a ugly registration number!!

You must have a Washington title, registration and registration decals to navigate,
operate, employ or moor a vessel on Washington's waters. Exceptions are:

• Vessels that are not propelled by a motor (canoes, kayaks, etc.) and sailboats
under 16 feet in length without a motor.
• Vessels less than 16 feet in length with a motor of 10 horsepower or less if used
only on non-federal waters.

Sounds like you don't need to license your yak unless you plan on using your Evolve on any of the Federally controlled waterways.  Kinda limits your options though.

Wow thats good to know about Washington.  The evolve would come in handy on a looooong day in the ocean fighting the current.  Too bad about the noise it puts off.  Thanks for the write up, I was wondering about the evolve!

Spot: Thanks for the post. So sounds like I need to have my sail with me  and then I qualify for the sailboat exception.

excuse the threat hijack but....

What about a sail-equipped Hobie Adventure, a 16' craft that has no motor? I wonder if that would need to be registered.
