No leash when in the surf.  I've rolled on a large day and had the paddle jam under me, snapping eventually when going over the falls.  Costly mistake.  I also like to come in backwards on all but the smallest days, facing the waves and paddling backwards so that when a bigger wave comes, I can position and or push through it.
