Given the circumstances, don't know what could be done for a better outcome than this. might even be able to dig a tooth out of the Outback.

It's interesting that the shark didnt close down more on the Outback.  I wonder if the shark realized at the moment it bit that the kayak wasnt what it was looking for.

think you're right. if it had been a full on attack, the outcome probably would have been more grim. still would STSOOM (scare the....). can GWS see color? i'd dig that tooth out for a souvenir.

I'm thinking the silhouette from below is dark regardless of the color of the yak.  Maybe we could get kardinal_84 to point his GoPro up at his yak from 20-30' down.

They've had multiple attacks in that same general area for the last 6-8 years. all roughly this time of year. most notable before this one was the one on AC's Yellow, Paddled, boat. but if i'm reading through the rest of that forum correctly, there was another less violent encounter like only a week before.

most guys who know the area won;t fish there between certain months because of the history of attacks.

what is freaky is that this one occurred in roughly 20 FOW, carried out as a vertical missile attack by a 15- 18 footer. wonder if the critter stood on its tail and attempted a jump shot, too??

I was thinking the same thing.  We don't have great whites up here but I sure would NOT want to be mistaken by a pod of transient Killer whales...they eat great whites for breakfast.  The mirage drive and the video of the fins in action from underneath and the way Hobie compared them to penguins and such really had me thinking when I saw the Killer whales in Homer. I may be a while with winter but someone could easily attach their lines and send one down.  I'm going to do it the first chance I get so I have an idea.

I've been told the killer whales are smart so they wouldn't attack a kayak but I also think humans are "smart" and I know I plincked birds with a BB gun when I shouldn't have as a kid...just for fun.

I encountered one of those killer whale pods out of Seward one time.  They are so very intelligent, it was eery.  The big male in the pod stopped about 70 feet in front of us (in kayaks) and just sat there with his eye above the water watching us.  His family came from our left, submerged, must have swum under us, and re-emerged off to our right.  It was as if the big guy was telling us to stop as his family passed.  As soon as they came up on our right, he dropped down into the water and took off.
