Hobie Paddle Leashes

The kind made out of shock cord inside of tubular webbing.   

When you are putting stuff away after a day on the water and notice a knot in the end of the leash, do not assume that you accidentally knotted the leash while paddling.  That knot holds the shock cord, and keeps it from retracting all the way to the other end.   

It is slightly less annoying to fix than when you accidentally pull the string out of your swim trunks, but it is the same idea.
