I've been a little lax on this board since moving to Portland about a month ago and for that I apologize.  My excuse is that I've been busy settling in.  Besides, my truck, kayaks, and all my fishing gear were still in California until this past weekend when I flew down to get them.

I realize that for many of us winter isn't exactly kayak fishing season, but I'd be up for any type of fishing kayak or otherwise.  I don't have my OR fishing license yet (I'm waiting until Jan), but I could always pick up a day license if needed.  In particular, if anyone wanted to show me some steelhead fishing this winter I'd be most grateful.

Barring an actual fishing trip, I also wouldn't mind meeting some of the Portland members here, maybe for a beer after work or something.

Brian,

I'm in Portland also, and jonesing for some fishing, but seems like there's not much going on right now.  I'm told that Winter Steelheading should be gearing up around Christmas time in some of the local rivers (Sandy, Clackamas, Kalama {Wa}), and the Deschutes is always an option if you don't mind a couple hour drive.  I've been gearing up for Winter Steelhead fishing and tying some winter steelhead patterns.  Went a couple of times last year with traditional drift gear (one hook up only on the Sandy), but now prefer fly fishing when possible (especially Spey fishing for Steelhead). Pretty novice fisherman though so can't give much good advice and my results don't often equal many fish.

I can send you an e-mail if/when conditions look right to give it a try if you're interested.

Would love to take the kayak out and try some fishing, but don't know where/what to target at this time.  If anybody else has any ideas count me in.

FYI - Came across this site the other day that has a nice NW Oregon fishing calendar http://www.aojtv.com/page/page/690020.htm

It's definitely some tough conditions this time o' year but still a blast. Was fishing in the snow last weekend. ;D Like S6 says the trout and steelhead are going to pick up along w/ resident salmon in the sound here in Wa. If you're down for a road trip let us know. Would be happy to show you around.

Beers one evening after work may be the way to go.  Coordinating schedules over the holidays will be a challenge.

The coastal streams should be fishing for steelhead, assuming the storm damage/mudslides haven't trashed them too badly.

Me too!  I hope to fish this Sunday somewhere.  I may go bottom fishing or surf fishing.  Today I'm trying to find out more about this Marine Reserve stuff going on here in Oregon.  I'am hearing the govenor wants to put the brakes on public usage on some Oregon Reef's and designate them for research.  Probably some Snowy Plover huggers group behind this.  Starting to get worried.  Anyway, welcome to the great state of Oregon.

What do you mean "isn't exactly kayak fishing season"!?!?!? It's never not kayak fishing season!!!!
It ain't over till,,,till, till the fat lady sings! AND I ain't singing and I ain't no lady!!
The Sturgeon bite is on above the St. Johns bridge and that means it should be on below it as well. The weather is,,, well,, the weather is weathery. Hey! Its Portland! There's a reason Columbia Sportswear is there (and has really good outlets!!)
Friday's outlook is good (ish?), I'm in on Wed, and my license is about to expire! Lets go GETTUM!!!!

caution: Wali has a tendency to plan outings, show up late, and perform silly fish dances.

Maybe we should start with a beer?
I'm in town and available (more or less) 12/18 to 12/31

Hey Wali,

Glad to hear you'll be back in town.   I'm not going anywhere for the holidays, so we should definitely meet up for a beer and plan something.
