LEE,
Not sure how you would get to a launch point since i never found any roads, but if just fishing, maybe Giants Graveyard a few miles to the north?  not too long ago i looked at that area and gave up on it becuase ;

1) couldnt find a road to get me to a launch point near it even using google earth.

2) if there is a launch point nearby, it appears it may be on reservation lands and possibly not open to non tribal members

3) couldn't decipher the language surrounding all the Sanctuary/Marine Reserve/ Whatevers that encompass that entire area, and therefore not sure of the legality of fishing there

Let me know if you actually get to play in the area you've been looking at, it does look like a fun place to be.

I think you have Destruction island confused with something else.  Kalaloch Campground is within 6 miles and has beach access.  If life presents time and the ocean cooperates, I'll check the place out, though after looking several resources, I don't think I'll have to venture more than a few hundred yards from the campground to be in Ling Heaven.

Seems that a 12 nm round trip without overnight camping on the island might not leave much time for fishing around the island.

Maybe in poor conditions.  That's about 90 minutes of kicking.  But as previously mentioned, there is structure a few hundred yards from the beach.

there is also ling fishable structure just offshore from La Push, but its a lengthy drive in the car to get out there.  Launching from the harbor or river is simple and one can generally avoid any surf in the summer

Thanks alpalmer. I've wanted to go camp at Mora sometime and fish out there. Its nearly a 3 hour drive from my place. 6 hrs is too much driving RT for one day any more.
I'll have my surfing gear along to deal with any wave action that looks good. I know a few surf spots out that way. Most require a hike, but 1st beach right there in La Push gets good at times, for small waves.

The times that I have went out there, it has always been for two or three days.  I've caught fish by paddling directly out from the river mouth and heading south maybe 1/4 mile.  You'll need to look for the structure but there seems to be plenty.  I've caught ling and rockfish.  The current drift can be significant so that's something to pay attention to.  My neighbor did well for salmon one year out there just seaward of the breakers.  Not sure of the exact conditions but it happens.  Also, a bit more ambitious trip would be to head north to just north of Hole-in-the-Wall.  There is a lot of rock drop off up there.   I've only fished from the rocks up there but would expect that lings and cabezon would also be likely.   Big swell, though, is an issue.  I used to go in Septembers and generally had favorable conditions.

Edit:  I might add a comment that there is a boat launch between the campground and Rialto beach on the north side of the river.  It's a bit crude of a ramp but works well for kayaks and provides a bit of a freshwater rinse after being out on the ocean.  The current isn't much when coming back but it would be easier if you planned it for an incoming tide.  I haven't been up there in the past three years so I can't speak for how things are now.  I would expect some changes.

The swells start coming more often in Sept. My favorite month for being on the ocean salmon fishing is Aug, and only on days when the swell is small and the winds are very light. I never have much fun on the ocean getting tossed around in a boat by dicey conditions. Last thing I want to experience.

 I'm not much into proving myself in extreme conditions, or going on any hair-ball macho adventures any more. Been there, done that, and got the T-shirts. I like to get out and have a good time, but don't like to push the limits too much any more. I don't ever want to have to suffer the extreme embarrassment of having to be rescued due to having exercised lousy judgement.

I will say right now that I don't think I ever want to paddle the 4 miles out to Destruction Island for fishing, even on a calm day. I'd much rather paddle out at some place like La Push or Makah Bay, Neah Bay, or here, and stay closer to the beach.

Wind has usually been my nemesis at Rialto.   I usually try to be on the water by 5-6am and off by noon.  Sometimes later afternoon, early evening offers up a few hours.

I'm on the same page as you about the distance to some place like Destruction Island.  One is certainly exposed out there with little choice for a bailout place.  But like many trips, with the right planning, training, preparation, it might go off without a hitch.
