The trout fishing has been pretty decent at the lower elevation lakes. The prime lakes up in the hills are still snowbound, it snowed another 9" up there today. Wouldn't plan any Memorial Day trips to the high country....

See you out there, but only if you get there early.....

Nice photos and fish. I would like to explore that side of the Columbia more often.

I use a Canon 20D in a waterproof camera housing.

I was there again this morning and the fish were still biting. Looks like the wind is dying a bit, could be a good weekend for kayak fishing. The water is getting pretty warm, if you are in the area and it's not too windy, you can launch at the fish hatchery and try for smallmouth bass in the Columbia(there's some salmon around, too). The White Salmon is totaled from the dam removal, no more fishing there and judging by the morning parade of boats towards Drano Lake, it is most likely packed to the gills right now.

Yeah, they jump all the time. Jumping and throwing the hook is the most common way to lose a fish.

Sorry to report the nearly 65°F water in the lakes connected to the Columbia River have really slowed down the trout fishing. I did see a lot of fish surfacing near the shoreline, probably smallmouth bass and bluegill looking for spawning nests. Ospreys and herons were diving on the bluegill and small rainbows following them.

I've caught some pretty decent smallmouth bass in the Columbia River tossing a leadhead grub against the shoreline rocks or dropshoting when I'm too lazy to cast. You have to keep an eye on the wind though, it comes up quick. As far as inland waterways go, the Columbia can be treacherous to the unprepared.
For trout, the fishing has to move into the high country. Spoke to the rangers, the roads above 3000' are still covered in a foot of snow, gonna be another week or so before we can get up there.
