Hmmm ... WAF seems to be defined here ... http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/wiki/index.php/WAF

What it fails to mention are the variations on WAF, such as GAF (Girlfriend Approval Factor), KAF (Kid Approval Factor), and even DAF (Dog Approval Factor).   :P

WAF is a little term I burrowed and adapted from audiophiles (people who love their high-end stereo equipment) and used it on the NCKA board about three years ago.  For some reason it stuck.

WAF = Wife Approval Factor and it refers to that otherwise unspoken points system your wife uses to keep track of you.

When you go out and buy that new GLoomis fishing rod you've been drooling over, that G-Loomis rod carries a very low WAF meaning it decreases your overall WAF by a lot.  If your overall WAF gets too low you won't be going on that big kayak fishing trip.  Of course tackling that honey-do list increases your WAF.

There are subtle nuances to the whole WAF thing and everybody has their own point system, but the wife never tells you explicitly how it all works.  It's up to you to figure it out.  Oh, and mentioning the concept of WAF to the wife can cause a big drop in the overall WAF.

Hey Rich!

Dadgummit!  Before I could type out my response to your question, two other replies jumped in ahead of me and now you've replied to even THOSE.  Oh these stupid slow fingers.  Any way, this is how my response was supposed to read before that happened:

Welcome to the board, BTW (by the way).  I'll go ahead and explain those and ruin it for the NEXT guy that picks up this thread and wants to look all knowlegable to the new guy.  Here goes...

Mooching is just jigging, but with bait instead of an artificial lure.  A lot of power boaters with high dollar downriggers seem to think that it's a poor man's way to have a chance to fish for salmon.  I'll guarantee you that there are at least some times when mooching or jigging beats trolling, like at the Moutcha Bay Tyee tournament (no pun intended).  And I really think that it's your best shot at halibuts too, since they are laying well below 200' so much of the time.  Just like the way that Zee puts it in another thread, for kayakers trolling is quite the "conundrum", and so we wind up jigging or "mooching" a whole lot of the time.  Check over at www.SalmonUniversity.com for more info on this one.

And WAF?  That goes back at LEAST as far as the NorCalKayakAnglers board (NCKA from whence THIS board was spun off) that I'm aware of.  It's simply "Wife Approval Factor".  Once in a great while you might see GAF, mostly only used by the illustrius Polepole.  GAF?  That's just "Girlfreind Approval Factor".

I did pick up the WAF term on NCKA. I remember when Brian first used it- and was asked to explain. It caused quite the stir.

To add to the "mooching" explanation. It was a technique that was supposed to have originated with Japanese Americans in Seattle, at around the turn of the (Twentieth) century. It was done out of rowboats, and supposedly that is still the most productive way. The stroke of the oars would cause the plugcut herring to first speed up (and rise) then slow down and fall. Irresistible.

To further confuse: you'll sometime hear of "motormooching" which means to use a motor that is slipped in and out of gear to provide a similar action of traditional mootching. Then Joel/"Mootch" (of NCKA infamy)came up with the term "trooching" which was a blend of trolling and mootching and was meant to confound the local fishcops looking for illegal hook use.
