Has anyone found a way to make the old style rod pod lid more rigid?  btw - does the new style replace the old style without modification?

Yes, make your own from fiberglass.
Worth every penny, and minute to do so.

revjcp,

Yes, the new style rod pod cover is a direct replacement of the old without any modification.  It is also significantly more rigid  than the old style.  I replaced mine last year and to me it is well worth the upgrade.

INSAYN did a wonderful job on the rod pod cover he made.     I am not as handy and  have never worked with fiberglass, so the "off the shelf" option is the only option I have.

That was my first fiberglass project.  It's not hard to work with, just messy.  8)

+1  Easy and very messy. I would definitely recommend wearing gloves (latex, nitrile, vinyl etc) as the epoxy tends to go everywhere. Even if your not worried about exposure to the epoxy, cleaning it off your hands (or anything else it touches) can be difficult.

Not sure if you have seen the post about 15% off at outdoorplay.com with coupon code BCE-1000

But it still works with free shipping so it come out to be $84.11 for the upgrade to the new rod pod.

I have been considering it myself but will probably wait to long and they will either discontinue it or not offer discounts on it when I do decide to buy it

+2.  As a guy that has worked with epoxy alot, I highly recommend ALWAYS using gloves.  You can not wash the resin off with soap and water.  Some people easily develop an allergic reaction to epoxy resins.  I never have, but I have always used nitrile gloves.  I get them for free by dumpster diving at the local proctologist's office :bootyshake:.*  OK...I was just kidding, and highly recommend against dumpster diving for medical waste. :police: Anyways, if you do attempt it and get some on your skin, I found the Purell stuff that you keep in your man purse (to disinfect your hands after you shake some dirt bag's hand) works well to remove it.  Do not use Acetone to get it off your flesh.   Acetone will dissolve it and transport it right into your fatty hand tissue.   Harbor Freight has inexpensive nitrile gloves.

Was able to stiffen my old style lid, by simply screwing from underneath, some sort of stiff plastic sheet to the top  side. Worked pretty well but did nothing for the poor fit which allowed a lot of water in while in, on and under the surf (my usual thing). A bit heavier but was able to mount to it with more confidence.

I've since replaced it with the new lid. I don't find the mounting options all that useful but it fits great and seals much better. Take your time fitting the seal and insure you cut it long enough that the ends fit tightly together without bunching up.

After having both, if time and priorities allowed I would definitely give the Insayn route a go. Customize to your use.

Appropriate? Why the hell would you wait for that? Don't try to tell us that you're not the kind of guy who spends too much time over in the Chum Bucket - we know better than that.
