I am sturgeon fishing next week and was gonna take my yak.  But I am thinking better of it and was considering fishing with someone who knows what they are doing.  I am not looking to catch and release... I want to keep what I catch... who is the right person to talk to that would be willing to show a newb the ropes on this one?

So are you looking for a guide or just a yaker that knows how to catch them? If you combine those you get groundswell. Might be the best of both worlds. Are you looking for around PDX or WA?

Where do you hope to go fishing...Colombia River (need to check for open days and closures).Northern rivers (I'm not sure of any of those but hear there is some available).Chehalis River is open all year 24/7 near Montesano would be pretty close to Shelton.Willapa River is open but I am unable to devulge any info on it yet .
The Chehalis might be your best bet for a begining trip.Let you work out whatever bugs that might need fine tuning.I'd suggest going to Friends' Landing just south of Montesano. There are some deep holes just upriver from Hwy 107 bridge. Not saying you only fnd em in deep holes...but that will give you a starting point.
There is a lot of good water between Montesano and Cosmopolis you might want to check out.How to fish.com has an informative arcticle on fishing the Chehalis--check it out.

The more details you post about up-coming trips--the more specific help you will recieve.......good luck.

Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

You should not anchor in deep water alone. If you want to come to PDX I'm sure someone would be willing to show you the ropes with some C&r but anchoring in deep water with an unknown current is a bad idea. Why not learn how to actually catch them and then go after a keeper?

My message wasn't very clear. I will be fishing in the Columbia above the bridge with a friend and my son in a pb. But I want to catch one or so from my yak too.

Noah - I  would be happy to fish with someone who could show me the ropes. I just don't want to assume someone wants to do that for free... I would be willing to pay for a guide, but would rather fish with someone for fun and grab a meal together afterwords. It doesn't have to be in washington. I would come to Oregon for a couple days of fishing... The two day license is pretty cheap.
