Looks like those of us with a Standard Horizon HX-75x, HX-760 or HX-85x VHF radio can get a backup battery or two for those really long days on the water, or multi day trips nowhere near a charger.   Could be a good item to have in a dry bag as an additional safety item.

Googled several venders and looks to be about $45-$50.  Worth it to me!

There is also a battery tray that accepts 5 AAA cells. Also a good backup.

Saw that one too for $25, and figured the AAA's could be recharged via solar.   8)

Your standard horizon lithium battery can be charged with solar as well.  If you get the Goal 0 with the 12v output, it will plug in with the cigarette lighter adapter that comes with standard horizon radios.

Just a note on using AA or AAA battery packs in VHF radios.  Many (all?) handheld VHF's won't work at high power (5W) when using AA or AAA batteries.  It has something to do with the max current they can source.  Check your user's manual.

Just a note that rechargeable batteries generally have a different nominal voltage than alkaline. 1.2 vs 1.5; normally this doesn't make a difference, but sometimes it does. (the more cells, the larger the difference)
For example
5 AAA nimh = 6volts
5 AAA alkaline = 7.5 volts

Plus AAA rechargeables usuallly have a horrible mah (longevity).
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

Pretty much why I originally just posted the Li-Ion backup battery.
It would also be easier in the end with just the FNB-V99LI and a solar charger as Lee indicated.

Now if I could just get 26 folks to donate me $1000 each, I could get this and provide all the charging needs of an entire NWKA camp on an island AND provide shade.

However, this would only be good in an area that actually has the sun available more than hour a month like we have here in Oregon.  :-\

Awesome! If they made a mini one, I could wear it like a batman cape. I'd be supplying power and looking cool at the same time.  (Well, for at least an hour.)
