I believe it is a pink year for the local river up there and there is beach fly fishing show for them in the salt near the mouth of the Oyster River. (Just a few miles down the road towards Courtenay from Campbell River) That beach pink show would be totally doable by kayak. I used to fly fish for trout in the Oyster and nearby Black Creek but that was 40 years ago--and I think you are looking for more recent fishing info than  that!  :D If I find out more info I'll let you know.  As for camping--try the provincial site at Miracle beach (check out camping BC site on the web for availability)--it's right on Black Creek and has a nice beach for kids if you're bringing the family. (I spent every summer of my childhood on that beach)

Soooo...I wanna pick your BC brains.  I live in bellingham and have a nexus pass.  I can get to the tsawassen ferry in just under an hour.  I'm very curious about what points on S vancouver Island I can hit (on my kayak) that have good salmon fishing.  So, looks like my Tsawassen ports are around Nanaimo, Sidney or Saltspring Island.  I'd really, really love to get north of the border to fish.  I just need a starting point.

Can you guys give me any tips on locations (do I need to go as far North as Courtenay?), best month, or other online resources for getting info?  I tried sportfishing BC, but there's no real 2012 info there.  Could be too early yet.  I love pink fishing (when does that run start?), and of course, coho.  Are there any BC kayak fishing boards?

I'm thinking I could go up friday evening, and fish a saturday and sunday and come back sunday night.

I can be pm'd too! ;)

Hi Rory--there are a few spots just west of Victoria that are doable by kayak--with caution. Right at Sooke (45 min drive from Victoria) go to Whiffen Spit and you can launch from there for coho and springs(you'll need a downrigger for the springs). Further west along the same road, stop at the public beach access at Otter Point but check your tides as the current can get smoken off of Otter. Next stop west is at Muir Creek where there is a parking lot and you can launch into the creek and then out to the salt. There is a spring tack 1/2 kilometer off shore--check a chart and you'll see the reef or just look for the pb's trolling the edge. For camping, there is French Beach provincial site (you can launch from the picnic site there too.) or another camp site further west at Jordan River. It's right on the beach and there are coho, springs and groundfish to be had. Driving time from Victoria to the furthest point I've mentioned at Jordan River is about 75 minutes--doable in your time frame.
Please be careful--all the spots I've mentioned are on Juan de Fuca strait and subject to fog and afternoon westerlies that can come up suddenly.
Cheers,
T2

Tsquared, what a lucky fellow to have grown up on those Vancouver Island beaches!

I will be staying at Oyster Bay Resort south of CR July 28-Aug. 3, and may have my kayak with me. This will be my first BC flyfishing trip, and I'm sure looking forward to it. If you see a guy bobbing around in a mango Santa Cruz Raptor, say hi!

Hey Rory my wife and I are thinking about heading up to VI the first week of September and I have  permission to catch her a delicious salmon (Or Lingcod) but would prefer to fish with other kayakers if possible.

We are going to be in Nanaimo for a couple days then probably head on over to either Tofino or Uculet for a couple of days. Will be incorporating a weekend if you wanted to meet up. No need to confirm but if interested we should keep in touch.
