Hello, I'm new to kayak fishing ( went on my first ocean trip yesterday and I'm seriously addicted!! ) I was wondering if anyone has done any fishing around north jetty ? I know its good fishing and safe from the jetty and in a boat but I just wasn't sure how it is in a kayak...I was thinking about launching from waikiki beach below the light house?....also has any one fished off the peninsula ? any advice or safety concerns is greatly appreciated...

Thanks

Welcome EA!  We had a crabbing tournament there and if you do a search I think there a several fishing reports for that area.  Waikiki is a great launch location.
The two key elements are wind and tide.  You don't want to get caught in a stiff outgoing tide there and the winds can come up really quick.  Beware the summer north winds!  They can make for a miserable day.

Thanks for the info I'll make sure to check the tides and watch the wind, ive already seen its supposed to be a little gusty....I figured I might try just off one of the beaches too for salmon plus I need to practice coming in and out of the surf.

I've fished around the north jetty a few times.  Done pretty well.  The problem is that the best fish are off the end of the jetty and that's the trickiest spot.  Which is a massive understatement, cuz as fungunnin likes to remind folks, that river bar is the "Graveyard of the Pacific".  So definitely staying inside the jetty is my recommendation.  There are fish to be had.

A better (safer, more productive) thing to do is to go east from waikiki beach and hit the jetty that's on the east side of that bay.  It too can be tricky during peak current (pretty much like any jetty).  But it yields unbelievably large black rockfish.  And when it's on, it can be ON.  Like, a fish every drop.  I know there are lings there too, I just haven't caught any.

Waikiki is a good launch, though there is a bit of a haul from the lot to the beach (over logs and stuff), and some surf.  You can also launch at the cape disappointment boat launch and head up the channel towards the east jetty.  It's a bit more of a trip, but much easier launch.  What I'd do is check out waikiki first and then make a judgement based on what it looks like.

Great crabbing in that bay too.  Def drop a crab trap!  And I dunno if it's still there, but there was a mobile wood-fired pizza stand in the parking lot of waikiki beach.  Some amazingly good pizza.  Highly recommended!

Almost worth taking the trip just to eat that pizza.

I ended up dropping a crab pot and got one keeper, I fished north jetty for a couple hours with no luck before I heard the coasties on the VHF give a diminishing bar report so I figured I'd better pack up,..I've seen things go sideways fast out there while in a boat...next time I'll have to try A jetty (the jetty to the east ) and see if I can hook up with some of those sea bass
