Was thinking of having a metal fabricator build a lumber and yak rack for my Nissan Frontier crew cab, then started pocking around here, then found Insayn's insanely ingenious trailer hybrid.
Got to thinking about the teardrop trailers that a lot of folks are building on the ubiquitous Harbor Freight trailer chassis. I think a far more utilitarian design for fish yakkers is definitely possible, complete with room for gear, two yaks, sleeping area, cooking deck and lockable fully rigged-rod compartment.
Getting out the graph paper and pencils ...

I've been playing with that idea for awhile now, HF teardrop trailer based on the 'rimple' (http://www.angib.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/teardrop/tear00.htm) with some modifications.  Not sure how reinforced the wood would need to be to hold the weight of a SOT or two but interested in hearing the thoughts of others

I too have mulled the teardrop trailer over for a few years.  I was going to do the 2 x2 but then somehow my wife got knocked up again so with three kids I gave up. I would think that you could build steel uprights and cross members into the shell where you would place a roof rack. Or leave it external and removable.

Guys, that's cool that others are mulling this route. Love that link, Bigdood. There's even a design on there for hauling a canoe.
I think if you were to go with the heaviest rated HF trailer or one of the 5X8 or 5X10s from Tractor Supply, you could come up with a pretty comfy rig for hauling the yaks, sleeping and cooking, with pretty minimal tongue weight.
Lots of good stuff here, too: http://www.tnttt.com/

Looking at this one very closely. Might be an over-winter build. I'm just thinking about whether I want to put a lot of effort into a tiny sleeping space.

Well, I bought the dang HF heavy trailer, on sale for $349. I would have paid that much at least for a rack system for my truck. Will post if/when I build a sleeper ...

Tear drop trailers are awesome rigs and perfect platforms for light weight hard sided camping platforms for hauling kayaks.

If you have the resources, I would suggest vertical uprights mounted to the trailer frame, and are properly secured to the side walls of the tear drop.  Also keep in mind, that to have enough room between your kayak and tow rig, you will need to make the tongue pretty long to manage tight cornering otherwise you will have a LOT of kayak hanging off the back of the trailer.

Gander around this site for some ideas.

those tear drops are pretty sweet but for the cost I could buy something a little bigger/more comfortable.

If one of you decided to build one, take lots of photos please.
