Here's a handy little tool I found out about from John's Sporting Goods.  Before heading out you can check the wind speed and direction as reported by WSDOT ferries.

You can zoom in to the red boxes to get more detail.  Use along with the weather forecast for the same area:

http://www.atmos.washington.edu/data/marine_report.html

And the current speeds:

http://www.deepzoom.com/#/Views/Boat.xaml

and you'll have a relatively accurate picture of what it will be like out there.

Great tools, Rory.  I especially like the animated currents tool.  Those currents really flow in Deception Pass!
