Hi guys! Im a transplant from Cal and NCKA.org. Im moving to newport for certificate training in the aquarium sciences and am super excited to fish these waters! My program is for a year and depending on what the job market/internship availability here and back home might determine if I stay longer haha. I would love to hookup with any one for fishing/crabbing/clamming etc im a hunter gatherer type but still kinda new. Ive been kayak fishing steadily for two years now I am also a free and SCUBA diver I also just go into shooting ducks from my kayak :). I have never fished OR before and could really use some help with figuring out regs and licenses (boat validations stamp?!?!?!?) and learning some local knowledge on the newport area. Im really good at keeping spots quite if any one is worried about that! Also if its not to late I would love to try and catch my first salmon !!! This summer has not been productive in any way for them :( Ill continue to look around the site for more info Im really excited to start fishing! I have met some of you before at the Gimme Shelter tournament this year and had a blast! Thanks for looking!

Welcome, Wes! You're gonna love fishing Oregon. Salmon is still a possibility. Reading the regs is fun, you just need an attorney to sort them out ;-(

Don't have experience in Newport but I expect it's a great place to fish. We love Depoe Bay just 15 minutes north for crabbing and bottom fishing as well as salmon.

Hey Wes, welcome to the great NW! You've got lots of great options down your way. There are still salmon to be had in the ocean but they're moving into the bays and rivers right about now. When you go to buy your license you just need to ask them for an invasive species permit for a non-motorized boat, to go along with your normal license and tags. You can add shellfish, sturgeon/salmon/steelhead, tags.

Depoe Bay is a great spot to launch from, it's a protected harbor and gets you out to bottom fishing in just a few minutes. There is salmon around there too but usually a lot further out. I'm not too familiar with the other options down there but I'm sure you'll figure them out soon.

Another really good place not far from you is the Alsea there in Waldport. I usually go there to crab, and is one of my favorite places, but I have never tried to go out fishing there. I always do so well crabbing, but want to try the fishing sometime. The general kayaking around there is excellent but need to watch for good tides.

FWIW-There is a place there called the Waldport Kayak Shack and is operated by Waldport High School. They rent Sit On Tops and offer a guide service. They have a website: http://www.whskayakshack.com/about.htm

Welcome! Trolling around Toledo can be pretty productive this time of year, and close to you. Haven't heard any reports from down that way lately.

Hi Wes, if you are into clams, launch at the road turnaround between NOAA and HMSC, cross the channel to the sand/cobble on the north side.  Gapers, cockles, butter clams can be found.   Rockfish at evening/night from the south jetty just be careful of the boat traffic.

that is the right and privilege of any free American."

What's up Wes? It was great meeting you at GS6, those clams you brought were awesome. Hopefully, you'll have some time to head further north and hopefully you'll be around for ORC next year.

There's a salmon derby up here next weekend if you're free. Maybe you could hitch a ride with one of the Oregon guys that are coming up.

Hey guys can any one give me some advice? so I want to buy a annual licence but for me it will cost $106 and theres also only 3 months in the season left :( should I just by day licences? by an annuall shelfish and forget abut the invasive permit and not bring my yak up for now? I have a address here in newport problem is I havnt lived here for 6 months :( man if the license was date of purchase to date of purchase I would totaly buy one.

What I will most likely be fishing for is Crabs, clams, rockfish, and try for salmon at this point the salmon will be in the bays and rivers? So the river tag would be included in 1 day permit?

Thanks guys man I wish I wasnt a broke college student :(

Hey man glad you liked the clams! I would like to try the salmon derby but might not have all my stuff together by then. Let me know of any more get togethers so I can try and make them!
