I gave up on the winter crab season due to the quick weather changes. I'd see a decent window of calm weather, set the pots, then it would blow for 3 days. After a couple of exciting trips of pulling a 25 lb pot in 20 knots I gave up. It is nice to have fresh crab in December, but you really earn it compared to summer crabbing. Best of luck if you do go, and be very careful.

For longer soaks use a "hanging bait" such as a salmon or rockfish cark plus a "cup bait" such as clams/squid/mink etc. in a plastic crab bait cup (either commercial or homemade). Hanging bait gets them there and the cup keeps them around.  Add a little extra weight to your pots and doors if needed and make sure you have adequate floats and line.  I have let my yak pots soak as long as a week in the ocean off Netarts bay in the summer.  Set em, leave em, and pull em when the conditions allow.

I currently have 3 pots soaking in Netarts bay (dropped Sunday afternoon)  as I sit here in PDX.  I will pull them when I head over this weekend and have fresh crab for dinner ;D

Set out a pot yesterday while the weather was nice.  Fished for salmon on the way back, but no luck.

Today chickened out twice thought about going out twice but good judgement got the better of me and I stayed home due to wind and waves.  Finally retrieved the pot this evening when the wind dropped below 10 nmph.  Saw one coho jump for sure, saw a few more likely coho, so they are still around.

Three keeper Dungeness in the pot, now cooked and in the fridge.

Hope to go out at least once a week, but not too crazy to want to go out when there are whitecaps on the water.   Time to start wearing the dry suit again...  Waders and a splash top aren't really enough any more.
