Question for you Oregon guys.  Does your license run from Jan 1 to Dec 31?  What is the salmon tags, etc all about?  Are there places north of PC but south of the columbia that the fishing is good... obviously, in a kayak?

Yes, 1-1-13 to 12-31-13. You tag salmon, halibut, sturgeon, steelhead you catch on the tag. If you don't have a tag you can't fish for those fish. Is that what you're asking? Unless you get a one day license, as they're included in the total cost. There are places to fish but I haven't fished any of them.

I'm just trying to budget for licensing for the next year.  Trying to figure what I would fish for and if it is worth the whole year or if I should just go trip by trip.

I did the same thing to figure out if I should get a Washington license.  I figure since it is a pink year it is worth it.  Plus, with all the chums you guys slayed, I figure it is worth it.  If I cross the border 5 times it breaks even for me.

Lots of places to fish other than Depoe and PC.  They are the easy access Monkey see Monkey do launches.  That said many of the other launches require more work to access and the fishing  may or may not be better.  They are also rarely divulged by those who have put in the leg work to discover the access point or learn the fishery.

If you are planning on making only a handful of trips and you're happy focusing on bottom fish then I'd skip the salmon tag.  If you are thinking of coming back in August and September and chasing salmon then buy the salmon tag, or wait until then to buy it. Day or multiple day licenses may be cheaper in the long run than buying an out of state tag if you only plan a handful of trips.

I have plenty of salmon to chase here.  I figure 6-8 days would break me even on the regular license.  That is why I am asking about places I might fish between Astoria and PC.

I'd suggest concentrating on PC.  Its an easy, protected and very safe launch with all the facilities nearby one might want.

You have: ability to drive to the waters edge for launching, free parking, restaurants, store, coffee shop, hotel, campground, restrooms, fish cleaning station all within way less than a 1/4 mile/walking distance of the launch.  The fishing can vary from OK to Off the Hook and the Dory fleet can be a comfort and safety backup for those new to the salt.
