There is a relatively new outfit running kayak fishing trips in Costa Rica.  It's run through the Oso Yacht Club (http://www.osayachtclub.com/).

Anyway, they sent a link to this video to me this morning.  I thought I'd share it with you all.  Looks a bit hairy when he bills that sail.

Yeah, hope he wasn't silly enough to try and bring that sucker aboard for a pic after the vid cut away. I agree, grabbing the fish looked to be bad decision making. Cutting the leader and releasing it seems to be the safe choice... for the fish and the fisherman. ;)

Yikes!

I would be concerned about the bill either from an aggressive fish or by accident, I can't believe that guy brought that thrashing fish so close to him.

Unfortunate treatment of the fish.   :-[

In reality, it's not done any differently off the big boats.  I've caught quite a few marlin and sailfish and have seen a number of them bang their heads on the side of the boat.  It's a delicate game being played.  Do you play the fish completely out to get an easier release, however the fish may be overstressed?  Is the fish too green to bring in such that it may cause harm to itself or the crew?  Do you take the hook out (requires more handling) or cut the line as close as possible (less handling)?

A sail of that size is easily manhandled.  And the way it was doing lazy jumps at the end lead me to believe that the situation was perhaps not as bad as it seemed.  Thrilling to watch ... yes!!!

I don't know anything about fishing for those kind of fish so I'll take your word for it Pole. I believe you had a good discussion over on ncka about care of sail/bill fish and how to land etc. I remember the biggest point being that lifting the fish out of the water was the biggest no-no. Something about w/ it's size it'd almost crush itself under it's own weight out of water.

Thanks for sharing PolePole, but I wonder why he even bothered wearing a PFD---just my thought after watching it twice.
