I am looking at spending around $100 to  get set up for fishing on the sound. I have a light weight spin rod but I need rod reel and also what to buy to stock my tackle. I appreciate your input and wise knowledge!

Pinks are coming, so trout rod/reel will be perfect. Small pink buzz bombs and pink jig heads with small pink hoochies. You flyfish so that'll be good too for pinks.

You can use the trout rod/reel to jig for flounder. I like 1- 1.5 oz jig heads with 3"-4" Berkeley Saltwater Gulp Swimming Mullet. Same stuff we used during the HOW event at Solo Pt.

Craigslist can sometimes be a good source
for reasonably priced equipment. Some stuff isn't
to expensive to ship so also search cities beyond
your location.
Good luck...

So are they called "Pinks" cause you have to use pink to catch 'em?

They're called pinks because they spray so much blood and slime around, your yak is pink at the end of the trip! Seriously, I always assumed it was because of the delicate  colour of their flesh.

People really don't eat Pinks do they?  Oh the horror!!!

All kidding aside and to be brutally honest, most of my gear growing up was so horribly cheap. I'd just pickup the cheapest rod/reel combo I could find in medium action and use it for reds, silvers, what ever I could find in Alaska. Now I'm old and I still use the cheapest stuff I can dig up (penn 113h off eBay, a 114 off eBay) and a couple of 320 GTIs for salmon trolling.  The best rod for trolling I found was 13.00 and came with a pixie!  Yea, it's cheap off brand but it did the job on my power boat and think it outta be just fine with the kayak too I'm just too cheap to spend alot on gear.  My AI, well that's another story completely...

Pinks in the salt are decent eating fish. Better than a rainbow. You just have to care for them properly. Bleed and ice immediately.

I think because we tend to have such an abundance of options up here (dipnet for reds anyone?) that the only time anyone I know ever targets pinks outside of the comm guys, is when we take our kids fishing because they are a blast to catch and are hella easy to catch as well. Much like the chum, because of so many options, they are just over looked.

I have found that the hard part about finding great gear deals on "My"List is your competing with others searching for the same.  Sellers have typically researched to know what to ask price wise.

Maybe try hitting yard sales in water front communities.   I have come across some amazing deals that way by just hitting them early.  One had a pile of rods and reels with a sign saying $25 each.  In that pile I found Eagle Claw and Shakespear combo's that would not cost that new, to a couple of Lamiglas and Fenwick rods with very nice Shimano and Quantum reels.
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

Try looking at repair places - I just picked up a nice little 6' casting rod & reel combo from Ollie Damon's booth at the Sportsman show for $30. They had a lot of refurbished C3 reel and 8'6" salmon rod combos for ~ $90. I hadn't really thought of that source before. A lot of the reels have worn finishes, but seem pretty smooth.

I found this website with good deals 30% off + on rods and reconditioned reels.

Some of those deals are pretty tempting

An ugly stick and a salt Stryker reel gets you in the game cheap, and it's a very effective setup.

If you'll be fishing the Puget Sound, or any salt around here jigs are great, they are easy to use and always catch fish.   I like the Point Wilson Dart/Dungeness Stinger style, Crippled Herring, Buzz Bombs anything that immitates an injured herring/anchovie/candlefish.  You can sometimes find them cheap at the bigger wholesale Sporting good stores and occasionally at Pawn shops & yard sales.  After that Worm style jigs and then trolling setups for spoons, that's a bit trickier but you can do a search on this site  and see a bunch stuff we use, I think.
