Hi guys, I have a micro SD card from another camera, but I'm not sure if it will work with a GoPro.  I guess you need a 'class 10' card?  This one is a 16GB Micro SD HC.  Has a small 4 in a circle on it, so I guess that means class 4.  Is it going to work?

Sounds like class 4. I thing the Hero 1 and 2 recommend a 6 or 7 plus. Did you pop on the 3? If so, I'd imagine that a 10 is the standard. The 4 may be good for stills, but video may cut out and abruptly stop.

I don't have the camera yet, I'm getting it Saturday.  But I gotta be ready to go Sunday morning so I'll just get a new card if need be.  We're taking the kids zip lining and I don't want to miss any of the Gnar-Gnar, bra.

from my GoPRO2 manual:  "GoPRO recommends higher speed cards (labeled as Class 4 or higher)..

then under time lapse: "when using 0.5seconds, it is recommended to use a Class 10 or higher SD card"

seems counterintuitive but storing an 11Mb image every 0.5s requires a faster data save rate than 1080-30fps video...I believe the original GoPRO had a max. time lapse rate of 1 per second, so Class 4 would always be fast enough.

GoPRO3 probably requires Class 10.

...cheers,roger

Yea you have a class 4.  If you use it you may get choppy video.  I used a slow card on my hero 1 and had very choppy video. with the class 10 on the hero 3, the video is so crisp and fluid.

From my experience with the Hero2, a 32 gb card gives you more space than you can use on a single charge even when recording at the highest settings.  I can get about 2.5 hours of time lapse photography or video before the thing dies, and from GoPro's page it seems that the Hero3 is in the same ballpark.

I think roger's estimates are consistent with the amount of video I could fit on my 32 gb card, although its been a while since I've been recording for such long periods of time and when I was I used a mix of video settings to try and conserve hard drive space on the computer I had available to upload videos to.

I also don't really understand why there's so much variance, but even within class 10 there's a lot of variability in the cards when it comes to read and write speeds.  From some conversations I've had with people that know more about cameras than I do, if you're going to be doing recording/timelapse on the highest settings, buying one of the more expensive/faster cards is a good investment.

Which is dang close to what I get with a fully charged battery on my hero2.  So I am loaded up with extra batteries and 16gig SD crads.  I think that's what's keeping me from jumping to the Hero3.  I have probably more invested in hero 2 accessories than than the cost of the camera themselves.

After input from all of you guys and some online research, I'm definitely getting an extra battery, maybe 2.  They're only $20 each.  I'll just get the 64GB card and not worry about running out of space on multi-day trips when I'm recharging with the solar panel.

From GoPro support in this thread: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1770212 (last post)

    4K-15 (protune): 3.2 hrs @ 45 Mbps
    4K-cin-12 (protune): 3.2 hrs @ 45 Mbps
    2.7k cin-24: 3.2 hrs @ 45Mbps
    2.7k-30: 3.2 hrs @ 45 Mbps
    1080-60: 4.8 hrs @ 30 Mbps
    1080-48: 4.8 hrs @ 30Mbps
    1080-30: 7.2 hrs @ 20 Mbps
    1080-24: 4.8 hrs @ 30 Mbps
    1440-48: 4.8 hrs @ 30 Mbps
    1440-30: 7.2 hrs @ 20 Mbps
    1440-24: 4.8 hrs @ 30 Mbps
    960-100: 4.8 hrs @ 30 Mbps
    960-48: 4.8 hrs @ 30 Mbps
    720-120: 4.8 hrs @ 30 Mbps
    720-60: 7.2 hrs @ 20 Mbpswvga-240: 4.8 hrs @ 30 Mbps

I'm guessing those are numbers for 64GB. With your spec, you should theoretically get around 3.6hrs. You will most likely run out of battery before filling up the memory card.

Lee, I would highly recommend these.  Two batteries, and charger for only $29.99.

I purchased a similar set for my GoPro2 and they have higher capacity, fit better and the charger is bother AC/DC so you can hook it up to your solar panel pretty easy.

yes, I got that same Wasabi kit and have been very happy with the batteries and charger.

and same as others, I have found that a full battery charge is about enough to fill a 16Gb card, assuming I limit use of the LCD back viewer...
