the herring are here!
They started arriving late this week in the Chetco.
I am hoping to get out today and fill me cooler with bait.
Many large ones being caught, 10", but mostly in the 7"-9" range.

Right On, say how do you do that?  I want to take advantage of this but I think here we have to use jig gear or something.

Cool cool.

Don't be afraid to eat the herring too. Forage fishes are delicious and nutritious  ;)

box do you use sabiki gear?

ohbryant sabiki jigging works pretty well.

Yes.. With a decent fish finder and some sabikis you can clean house.  I want to get a bunch to smoke and can.  Springers like em too.  Not sure if they are in yaquina yet though.

They're in the Crescent City harbor too. This year they showed up February 11 and last year it was on the 14th. I'm hoping to get some for bait too, but too many things get in the way; work, spliiting next year's wood, and the damn wind. Maybe tomorrow.

Ron, Are you planning to make a trip for them this year? If so PB or kayak?

I usually play it by ear.   When and if the catch reports get good I can post a meet up and interested folks can drive over and try it themselves.

I'm not certain if it was herring but I was in illwaco and saw about 1,000 birds on the water and MANY seals diving at something....this was in the river btw just north of the Astoria bridge
