Last weekend Craig and I headed to the Sandy to see if we could find a few steelhead and get some AOTY points.    I managed to find one right off the bat, and luckily for me Craig was there to video the catch.  I think he was hoping that I would go down the next rapid backwards while fighting the fish, but I really was not in the mood for a swim.  To avoid the rapid I decided to ram my kayak into the rocky bar, that Craig was stuck on.   Once I was grounded I could have just stood up, or let Craig net the fish, but I had AOTY on my mind.

After the early excitement we figured we would see more fish that day.  Unfortunately that was the only one.   Even without any more fish we still had a great day floating down the Sandy.

Nice catch! It was getting intense there for a minute when you got the net tangled up!

Got it! Nice! Excellent work nate. Looks like an awesome river to float down. Beautiful steelie is a huge bonus!

If I were more competitive, I could have been a dick and ran behind him and netted it. He is lucky the AOTY season is young. >:D

Loved the vid! I have been wondering how well my Hobie would do on the Sandy or lower Clack. Did you guys feel comfortable throughout the drift? The Sandy seems a little safer since there are no sleds on the Oxbow to Dabney stretch.

I felt comfortable and it was my first time running that stretch.  I have other video of me running a rapid and then running aground hard because i was trying to avoid a spot a bankie was working.  I bent both my shafts bad but they were still parallel so I didn't  notice until I pulled the drive at the end.  I plan to do it again. The shafts will straighten out just fine in the vice.  :)

Cool. Are you using turbos or standard fins? And if you want company, shoot me a PM. I would jump at the chance to run the river.

Better use flour or something similar to check for fractures.  ;)

Nice fish, ndogg!!  Sweet video!

Thank you for the video Craig and Nate. Hopefully I'll get out there soon. Maybe this spring you will be able to up grade with a summer steely. Nate your spinner that you use for Springers landed me two big summer steelies last year. Were you floating eggs or shrimp?

Awesome job Nate...Craig, you're a good fishing buddy!

My role seems to always be to document Wobbler's many fine catches while hoping to fend off the ever present Polecat. See forthcoming Post in HOW-PDX section.

Nice work boys! It seems a drift anchor set up would come in handy for that area.
