What was the targeted species trawling rocks at 1200 FOW?  Whiting?

Fungunnin;

Bottom fish/flat fish was the target fish. All depends where your draggin net. Sometime we would have a 1/2 a mile of cable out. Ling cod are the tanks of the ocean. no matter what depth you brought them up from they were always mean and kickin. They would not pop like a rock fish, we could always return then to the ocean unharmed. What do you men by whiting? (hake?)

Yes hake ... I've always called it whiting.

Interesting that ling cod would be a by catch of a flat fish trawl.

You can get nice fish nugget cheeks from a 30 incher.  Probably smaller if you got a good knife and the know how.

sorry my bad i thought the question was directed at me
No worries. Were you guys right by the first buoy? How far out? That's a pretty popular spot for the salty yakers and the spot of ORC (Oregon Rockfish Classic).

Drag gear is the same for rock fish as flat fish, Usally flat fish (Dover, turbot etc.) are deeper. The only other gear I know of to get rock fish is mid water gear and that is done a night due to the fish coming up from the bottom. and you need the correct net and floats for that. I was one test away from my 100,000 ton license. when I left the ocean.
