You mean you can stow your gear in the hatch between your legs?  Geez never thought of that, guess I don't like to mess with opening it  although I have put live bait in there.  Good stuff boys!

Hey fishesfrom tupperware, where you been?

I take a smaller (4 tray capacity) tackle bag and stuff it through the center hatch.  Then, I open the bag and slide my plano tackle trays through the hatch and into the bag.   I usually only bring two trays on the salt. I also put tools and snacks in there. The bag does not slide around where I can't reach it. With two trays in the hull, I then put my Hobie bucket back in with the lures I know I will probably use. I remove the dividers and usually get 10 + soft plastic/jigheads of various colors inside along with some spare leaders.  The only time I need to get below the bucket is if I am hungry, or have snagged and lost all my lures.  The latter has never happened...yet.

I also have created bulkheads using bubble wrap.  I rolled it up and stuffed it between  the seat scuppers and the tank well scuppers.  I also jam some up by the drive well. This helps keep things where I can reach them.  My wife does way too much online shopping, but at least I get free flotation. It is pretty ghetto, but I also roll in a vehicle worth less than the kayak on top 8).  If I remember right, the rear hatch area and the area under the tank well is completely stuffed with bubble wrap rolls and those little Amazon air pillows.

In case you haven't noticed, there are two small holes in the forward edge of the hatch lip. I use shoe laces to tie to stuff that could slide out of reach.

Thanks for all the great tips.

Awesome - this info is gold!

Kykfshr - I think this is a great idea & FFTW mentioned it as well. Funny how this is just an upgraded ziplock bag idea, but fits the situation nicely.

Craig - what kind of tackle bag do you use?

I like a couple of things. Small worm wallets can hold a ton on gear (especially small terminal tackle) and keeps it well organized. They are NOT waterproof and if you don't empty them after every trip, everything (excspt maybe your lead) will be magically transformed into rust cakes.
An interior tackle trolley is an idea I picked up at the old KFS site.

"What you do is use the scupper hole posts as ends of a clothesline and completely loop the rope around them forming a single unit. You need some form of rope and clips. My favorite rope for this is Paracord and I prefer plastic clips like those found on a Sampo stringer. Make sure that you include the clips before tying the two ends together.
Once its completed you can attach many of your accessories. Its great for your drift sock, anchor wheel, lure boxes, mesh bags, dry bags, storage boxesm etc. I keep a lot of items handy with this system and since they're on a pulley they're always accessible."

I use it to string together water resistant tackle trays and I can pack like Mark Sosin. Just slide the the clothesline along until the right box comes into the "window". The only restriction is that the box has to fit through the center hatch. Plano makes some with removable dividers that'll fix a couple of kwikfish or a few big jigheads. It's a bit noisy but manageable. It's the reason I love center hatches.
You still have to empty them out though as I have not found any that are waterproof.

Thank you FFT!  I have been trying to come up with a system like this but nothing seemed quite right...you just blew my mind.  :icon_thumright:

Oh, I forgot to add another point to my original post.

How does everyone store / manage their lead? Mine are usually rolling around in a bag and I have to go by feel since most no longer have legible weight designations.
For the yak I generally use 2-8oz cannon balls, and 4-8oz pyramids.

I'd tried sorting them along with gear that I thought I'd use them with but that didn't go well - too much work and forgetting where I had what. ???

That's what I use the Hobie hatch tray/bucket for.  It's mostly useless for larger tackle but it makes a good lead tray. Or I use a smaller Plano box with lead sorted by compartment.

I have one Plano for lead, one for plastic and throw the other odds and ends into the Hobie thing, but that also goes IN the hull, not just sitting in the hole.
