Ok. So in my typical quest to see what can be accomplished from a kayak I was thinking about rigging up a 20ft gill net and giving it a try.

F&G says 2nd week of may is when they typically hit the shore.  I'll be down there anyways.  I know there is a small commercial fishery in the area so location is good by whiskey gulch.

Anyone think its unsafe? Any thoughts? I'm thinking the biggest issue might be overloading the yak if you hit a good school...lol. I can dream right?

Could work.. I wonder what the drag of the net in the water would feel like.

Video please!  I have got to see this.

My main concern would be ending up with something unexpected in the net, like a marine mammal or a chunk of radioactive tsunami debris.

That said, I often have no clue what I am doing and tend to be concerned about the wrong things anyway.
I would much rather be up a creek without a paddle than down one.

Some sort of a quick release would probably be a good idea. Then again maybe you don't even need that big of a net? Less drag that way.

How much herring you looking to harvest?  More than a sabiki or a throw net will get you?

You can only use 20ft max where I fish. So I'd just have a small buoy at the end and hand hold it and drift along adjusting as I needed.

As far as use, these are the large spawning herring. Personal use allows for a lot more like bait, feeding your dogs, bait...  I'd never use enough rod and reeling but we would go through a bunch shrimping and we grind a bunch up and throw it in a burlap bag and attach to the anchor for chumming halibut from powerboats.

Oh and my parents would love me forever and more importantly give me access to shelter food and motorized vehicles in kenai if I brought them fresh herring and kazunoko!!!

There's always the hooligan option for bait/chum but my parents would take these in addition to a few 40lbs cases of herring.

I like herring better for eating.

I'm not. Bait and consumption. But personal use here in state water fisheries allow for a wide usage. Basically if its not wasted its ok. Subsistence, personal use, commercial, and sport all have different rules. Need to be an attorney.

I don't have dogs but if I did, why couldn't I feed my dogs something so nutritious?

Because of PEW?  Uhh...not. I'm a conservationist as a user of the resource. And I'm part of the environment too!!!  To be able to supplement our shopping including dog food is a privilege or right, opinions differ, bestowed upon us by the state.

Having said that, wasting those resources or over harvesting the resources is BAD!!!

Argh.  Should think before I type.  I shouldn't flat out disrespect PEW, they do good work.  But I've seen what many would call extreme bias towards unrealistic goals that directly impact lives...many in the region I serve.

Ok...off my apology box...again...

Fuck Pew!

Few organizations really piss me off, but this one is at the top of the list.  They are the driving force behind MPA efforts around the world.  I hold them responsible for the CA MLPA debacle.  I hold them responsible for the OR MPA debacle.  I hold them responsible for what will become the WA MPA debacle.  Mark my words.  They may have good intentions, but that doesn't justify the means or the ends.  Doing the right thing means doing it the right way.  That's something they don't get.

I honestly don't know much about PEw, except for a couple of blurbs I read in a pamphlet about countries in Asia that would catch tons of herring that was used to feed livestock like chickens and pigs and some other group that used herring to feed penned commercial tuna..that no one would be able to battle from a kayak..just figured they were more for global conservation... oh yeah that and the cute gal working the booth next us at the Sportsmen's show that dropped $20 in the HOW jar (I'm easily distracted) and this really cool floaty key chain I got from their table. :P

As my posts imply, I do lean towards Allen's comments.  It seems like they want to turn everything into parks and rather than enjoy and utilize the great renewable resources, they geofence the area and say "enjoy it from outside the park please". It's not just fun sport fishing but lives and families are impacted.

I agree with global conservation and understand the importance of forage fish. But I'm part of the environment too, I shouldn't have to apologize for being an apex predator, but given our intelligence relative to other species, I would fully agree and support the notion that we must be responsible users and protectors of the resource.

Sorry in advance for thread jacking but I should note one thing about PEW. The particular project Dino is talking about is trying to protect currently unmanaged, unfished stocks of forage fish: sauries for instance. Protecting these fish does not hurt fisherman and only helps the predatory fish stocks i.e. salmon...

I am not familiar with all the details of MPA proposals so I don't want to get into that but this particular project seems like a win-win for everyone involved.

Herring are already managed so they are not relevant to PEWs forage fish project.
