It's sealions that give me the willies around here. If you've ever seen a big bull come shooting out of the water with a big springer in it's mouth and land in a spray of blood and water, you know what I mean. i don't want one doing that while I'm boating a salmon.

Pass!!!! I would never fish the open ocean like that from a kayak. A boat yes but never from a kayak as I enjoy walking on the feet I was born with too much.

Sharks scare the HOLY BEJESUS out of me. Maybe it was from watching JAWS as a kid but that just seems a little bit off to me.

I'd rather catch and eat fish than be caught and eaten BY a bigger fish, not my idea of a good day on the water. Lol
We're gonna need a bigger boat!!!!

Yeah, I can relate with you Lee.
Began surfing at age 12 and new to kayak fishing.
Every time I enter the ocean I am aware of being at the bottom of the food chain!
Spooky for sure, but feeling wide-eyed and tuned into the moment and wouldn't want to be anywhere else!
Have a plan, have fun, catch fish.
My spouse read where the shark circled the yak a couple of times before departing!
Doesn't look like a sneaky tiger shark...

Actually Lee, I really like your signature. Profound in its simplicity. But I'm a simple guy with simple interests.

Maybe I was eaten by a shark in a past life because I grew up in the Midwest, only fishing fresh water, and have an unrealistic fear of sharks. Creeps me out just watching videos like that.

Went bottom fishing once out of Garibaldi and we saw some sharks off in the distance and all I wanted to do was get my feet on dry ground. Completely freaked me out.

Screwed up part is I've been shot at in anger on many different occasions because of my chosen profession back in the day, been hit three times in various situations and would still rather be in a gunfight then on the water near sharks.

Does that even make sense??? Lmao  ???

Yes it makes sense, but we're still going to pick on you.  I took my daughter out in the salt a few weeks back.  Surely if a 10 year old girl can handle her own kayak out there...

Its not the ocean I'm afraid of, its what's in it I'm scared of.  :o

Your daughter is braver then I am then.  ;)

You can pick till I'm nothin but bone. Ain't no way I'm taking my kayak out there. I'd rather stay toward the upper end of the food chain whenever possible.

Might come out and watch while fishing from a big boat, or you can catch me on the Willamette. I'll be the guy with all the hair.

Interesting back and forth.  I can understand the comfort level thing.  It scares the heck out of me when I fish rivers.  I also don't like fishing a lake that I am the only person on it which is about 90% of the time here in Alaska.  4 miles out in open ocean...no sweat.  Sharks?  I not only dream, but am actively planning to see if I can match the feat accomplished by Polepole and his crew a few years back of landing salmon sharks in the 6ft plus range!

Tell me experienceing this type of strike wouldn't be AWESOME!  Maybe I shohuld get a 20 weight flyrod rod and set the world record for largest fish caught dry-fly fishing!  Do they make such a thing? You just need to watch the first minute!  ooooooooo.......gets the blood going!!!!!

Love the sig Lee!  When you are 100 yards or less from a pod of killer whales it does make you realize that we perhaps, at least while in kayaks, are not the APEX predator in the area.  But to be honest, the thing that gives me the most heebie jeebies on the ocean is the thought of getting picked apart by the sand fleas if I ever die...but then again, I'm dead so I shouldn't care!

There are sharks who visit the Willamette:

Basically, where ever you find sea lions and seals, you can find sharks.

To be fair, if I came to visit Oregon and had never seen a sturgeon before and saw a dead, bloated, oversized dino washed up on the bank, I would probably think at first that it was some kind of shark.  Leopard sharks have a similar body shape and their mouths even look similar to a dinos at first glance(minus the extending tubage that dinos have).
