You can slip a knife into the brain and kill it instantly too.  Here's how:

Halibut harpoons are easy to make.  Even easier if you buy one of the replacement spearpoints from Sportco.  The replacement spearpoints I've seen at SportCo have a 3/8" ID, so your rod should be 3/8" OD.

I have brain spiked a big halibut (80 pounds) and I would not recommend it.
A big halibut at the side of a kayak is not something to take lightly.
Kill the fish while it is in the water!

To the newer people on this forum: Keep in mind, we get into this conversation every year about this time.  If you really want to see all sides of this discussion go back and check out previous threads.  There are some pretty good reads from past years on this topic.

That said, please don't stop talking about this stuff; this is a discussion I like having over and over.   ;D

Thankfully, noone has mentioned firearms - seemed to be a favorite thing for the locals in Juneau when I worked up there.  Every year we heard stories of someone bringing a halibut into the boat - then shooting it - whoops!

I was wondering if anyone was going to mention that - I didn't want to be the first! I realize in this day'n'age it's considered a safety concern but honestly it's an effective way to simmer them down... if you shoot them outside the boat! :)

Ya ... A gun in a kayak with a halibut has bad idea written all over it.
This is coming from a guy who likes his guns more than most.

I always carry my gun in my Yak.  It's in a dry bag in the front hatch, because leaving it in the vehicle is dumb.  I thought about using if I ever catch a butt, then I realized that was a really f-ing stupid idea.

I use a .27 cal. ramset pistol on the job.....with no "nail" in the end, the plunger extends at least an inch past the safety tube. I suppose that would do the trick?

If you are that close a bait knife works really good.
