Game clips help huge here. Shove the pointed end under the gill plate and push it out the mouth. Almost impossible for a fish to keep you from running it on the clip. Even works on lock jawed cabizon.

Ok, I got to get the right one. The ones I've seen have some ball/latch mechanism that would be impossible to put through locked jaws.  Sharp stiff pointy end is exactly what I need. 

Is there a preferred model? Thx!

Nice ... enjoy the fruits of the sea.  You've got the makings of a Mother's Day feast there.  Did you see much evidence of bait fish off Whiskey? Any size on the herring, if any?  I saw some folks out dipping for hooligan last evening on the rising tide near 20-mile last night...

Caught 2 more buts today, lost one while trying to pit it in the boat. Darn.  Oh well, brought home $300 worth of filets for the weekend.
