There was a guy jogging yesterday without his rape whistle or helmet. I stopped him to make sure his mom wrote his name in his underware ....

The issue for those who are safety minded is that if/when he goes in the water, you are expected to render aid.  He's stupidity could put you into a dangerous situation trying to save him.  Been there....

You are not obligated to render aid if that action could put you at risk.
The 1st rule of life saving is "Save Yourself 1st".  You won't be helping anybody if you're dead.

I am an ecologist, by nature my brain thinks that natural selection will weed out those individuals not suited to survival. However with the human species it tends to be that those who act in a stupid and reckless way are often unaware of the fact that they do so and therefore put others (rescue workers) at risk to rescue them.  That's the part that gets me, if you just hurt yourself, yeah by all means be as dumb as you want to be, but dont make my neighbor risk his life for yours because you were too dumb to realize that the cold swift water you are paddling could put your life at risk.  If natural selection really worked that way,  that individual would be eliminated from the gene pool, and my neighbor and I would be sad at your demise, but not surprised...

Love thy neighbor. I didn't suggest being "the safety police" just recommended making some friendly conversation to see if he was interested in learning more about kayaking.

If he shows no interest, to quote from "Airplane" - "Chump don't want no help, chump don't get no help!"

Personally, I believe that we've done a disservice to humanity by errecting so many obstacles to natural selection.  It's just one more step toward Idiocracy and a failure to thrive society.

...Demonick ... Let others do as they please. If you feel unsafe just wear bigger water wings next time you are crabbing and might encounter a boat wake. ...

Hence, why I said in my follow up post (#5), "In the past I would mention it, now I don't."

I don't want a nanny and I ain't no nanny.  You have no idea of the risks I have taken in the past and the risks I take today.  However, I do pick my risks knowingly, with my eyes open.

There are high-horses and there are high-horses.  If one is not interested in promoting safety on this very friendly NWKA forum in this specific safety oriented sub-forum entitled appropriately enough, "For Safety's Sake", then perhaps one should simply ignore this sub-forum.

In certain situations I can't help myself. There are those times when you encounter another person in a kayak who, by reasons known only to them, is about to make a drastic mistake in judgement. I can't help but point out the folly in their reasoning. I try to explain my point of view and let them make their own choice after that.

In the last ten interactions only one thought it prudent to not to follow through with their original plan. The other nine ignored my warning. My feeling on the subject is that not saying anything is  a tacit approval of their actions. I don't want their memories in my closet.

Spot, as a science teacher, I agree with your survival of the fittest approach. As a person who has spent their entire life helping people I have to intercede. To each their own journey. Mine is one of contradictions.

+1 more for Demonick.  It appears he did let the other guy do as he pleased and he posted in the safety forum.  Not much to dislike about that.

Great topic and better comments. Spot, I identified with your comments the best. All were good, but some were better.
For me, it's better to be safe than sorry. My grandkids need me to make memories with them.
That said, I don't own a drysuit but ALWAYS wear a PFD. I try to go out with someone else. I always let MW (My wife) know where I'm going and when I'll be back in. I don't always adhere to that, but it is my goal. I just take the heat, flak, and tongue-lashing so I can go out again.
Better to be safe than leave to the grandkids without a memory maker.

My son's SAR group took a swift water rescue class lately. They had them watch this video before they let them bang around in the Clackamas in dry suits.

I know I learned something, like maybe I do want to spend the $$ on a dry suit now.
