Roy, have you ever fished under the train bridge in north bend? I've pulled some nice fish out of there and lost some huge ones too. The current can be annoying but if you fish the pockets it isn't so bad. I might be moving soon and that spot is going to be a short pedal away from the house. Sometimes I feel like it's more productive than fishing out of Charleston.

I fished there very little. I am 5 minutes away from the launch at Charleston so just more convenient. Ever catch any striped sea perch there? that's kind of why we want to go fish the bay, get a sea perch on the board for dude.

Can't argue with that. I haven't caught any with any size to them. But I have never really tried. All of the big greenling I have caught have been under that bridge, though. I've seen some nice ones pulled out of there. Good luck with the perch!

P.S. an old guy that I met last year while fishing for salmon off the boardwalk told me about a spot him and some other guys pulled 7 halibut out of a couple weekends ago.

Thank you all for the warm welcome.  We will be arriving Friday PM, and leaving Monday AM, so if the weather cooperates I plan on crabbing and fishing Sat-Sun.

The structure around Sunset looks awesome, and I can't wait!

The handline is sort of a necessity after getting a tandem.  With the g/f up front it's much less hassle using the handline.  And it's a lot of fun, especially for shallow water rockfishing.  And it floats.

Maybe I'll see you there - headed to Sunset Bay for the long weekend too - yellow Malibu 2 XL with a cute blonde up front and me in the back, probably swearing at a hung up rig. Hope the weather forecast holds and the clamming is good! (Big minus tides.)

First ever post from my phone. Now I feel like a contributing member of the 21st century. See you all there on Saturday, best to launch as early as possible to avoid the afternoon wind. 7 am at the launch ?

Can you go into detail a little more what the issue is with a tandem and regular lines?

Lee, we paddle a Hobie Kona tandem, which is one of the shortest tandems, so when I bring a rod it tends to get in the way, and I'm often helping her on the water with birds nests and rigging, so the handline works out great since it takes up almost no space.  No issues, really, just trying to keep things simple and easy.

7am sounds good!

That makes sense.  My wife and I use an Oasis, which has a little more room for using poles, but has terrible storage.  More than 2 big lings on the game clip and we're out of room in the tankwell.  We end up using one of the paddle holders as a rod holder most times too.

As ketapatterns alluded to, perhaps some clam digging Sat prior to fishing is in order?  Upon reflection I'm not so sure we'll be ready by 7am after a 10hr drive Friday.

Also just a heads up we don't plan on going out too far since my g/f is not totally comfortable in the ocean yet.  I plan on just tooling around the shallows.  I mention this because we don't want anyone to feel obligated to hang back with us.

Good luck this weekend. Looks like I won't be fishing at all this week. We just got a house and I guess I have to help move and paint and all that jazz. Perhaps the fish gods will praise me for my selflessness this weekend and put me on some high grade aoty entries the next time I'm able to fish.
There's some good clamming in the bay in Charleston. Have fun!

Eric, no worries. I am feeling the same way about Saturday morning although I only have a ~4hr drive :) It will be our first time at Sunset Bay so we're going to explore and just see how it goes. Drive safe!

There is a place where you can launch and paddle to some good clamming or places to just park and walk out to clam, your choice.
Looks like the early afternoon might be good to fish on saturday so you could clam in the morning fish in the close in areas in the afternoon then fish on sunday a little farther out , the conditions shouldl be better . You fish north and soth at sunset not so much out, so never too far from shore.

Thanks for the info! I've heard that the clamming can be good right in Sunset Bay too, is that true or should we plan on driving over to the big bay?

I'm not a clammer but i have never seen anyone digging clams on sunset bay proper or if it's allowed. i don't think they would like a bunch of holes dug on Sunset bay beach.

The clamming is real close to there though, just minutes away
