Thanks, I just talked to them. He is talking me out of the Pro Angler 12 due to its lack of seaworthiness in Rough conditions. I am kind of bummed because I thought that was going to be the one.

Not to complicate things and I don't have any personal experience with the PA, but I was out this weekend in some pretty bumpy conditions and witnessed a PA seemingly doing just fine out there...granted the guy at the helm has a ton of experience, but...
Rumluck,
Where did you see the PA12 fishing in rough conditions? Just curious.
The reason I ask is I was fishing PC on Sunday with a friend from Hobie. I put him in an Outback. The only other kayak I brought with me to the coast for weekend with my family was a PA12. Sundays weather sucked. I really wished I had my other Outback with me as the PA12 gets pretty sloppy in that kind of wind and wind waves. Also...IMO....The best kayak for those kinds of winds, swell and wind waves would have been a Revo 13 or an Adventure. Killer fishing though! Only a  few of us actually made it out, but of those that did, we did very well.
Jammer, you are the guy I was referring too; it seemed like you had it all under control from my perspective  :)

Nice.. It was pretty ugly on Sunday. I did see Noah and Skidplate hammer a few big fish too. Especially Noah's big Ling.
Sorry about hi jacking your thread guys...
There are lot of great kayaks out there. Just demo a few and find the right kayak that fits. Also, before you buy, visualize how you want to rig it. If it all fits, but it!

So how would the Oasis do as the primary rough/salt water yak?

My wife and I took it out several days through a surf launch and landing 2 weekends ago.  The swells were 4-5 feet the entire time and at points it was raining so hard I couldn't see the front of the boat.  Surf landings are a bit challenging, but doable with practice.  Landed tons of good sized bottom fish with zero issues.  I also own two Revos, and they are pretty fast and stable, but somehow, that tandem is faster and more stable then they are.  I've been really impressed with it.

I have an Oasis and absolutely love it.  Fast and stable.  The only thing it's short on is storage, it's hard to fit more than three good sized fish in the tank well, bit not impossible.  If you want a tandem, it's the way to go

+1 on the Oasis. I've had mine since last summer and have to say it has been great! Works as a solo option and wonderful taking my wife or kids out. Haven't made it to the salt yet - that's next!

I am not a river fisherman, so I'm not sure what purpose the added real estate of the more stubby boats fulfill.

The Outback seems to turn quicker and is more stable when cutting into a strong current. When river fishing I like to drift bobber and eggs or a variation of that technique. The Outback gives me room to place these items for quick replacement. The ability to turn quickly lets me keep the bobber in sight.

I fished from an Oasis off Maui in 5-6 ft swells and 10-15 knot wind.  Both myself and the guy in back were experienced Hobie owners.  I have and LOVE my Revo 13.  I thought the Oasis was an awesome boat for a tandem. Of course you are losing deck space - you are trading fish storage for another big mammal!

UPDATE:

Well, I sailed the fleet today. PA 12, Outback, and Oasis.

Thoughts:

I'm fat and had the uncoordinated fat guy thing going trying to get in and out from a doc that was same elevation as top of yak on water. Once in the oasis, and outback, I felt good, but feel the uncoordinated fat guy thing would come into play fishing from the outback (trying to reach around and fetch stuff, leaning forward, and putting poles in holders.) I need a lot more seat time for sure.

THESE THINGS ARE NOT EFFORTLESS TO KICK PADDLE. I was surprised at the sweating and workout I got from a short test drives out on Smooth Lake Union. -This is probably a good thing, see above. :)

I did NOT like the PA. I was shocked by this. On all 3 yaks I went max speed (at least as much as I could) and threw the rudder over. I felt the PA was going to dump me in. No way I want it on the bay, It's a me thing. Seat was comfy though, and standing up was also cool.

The War Admiral insisted on a 24 hour cooling off period to think and reflect. Tomorrow I will probably go buy the OB and OA. I figure if I made a mistake on the OB, I can always sell it and get the more expensive one.

Sorry, I need to run and fetch me a sandwich.

PS.. You never want to be without food or drink on one of these huh?

I second Rory's opinion. Good choice. The outback is awesome for bigger dudes.

Don't reach around, sit sideways with your feet in the water, helps keep you from tipping the boat over.

Flienlow -

Your effort level will likely go down when you 1) get your pedal adjusted to the right setting and 2) you get Turbo fins.

The standard fins are small, and almost every man (and woman) on this board find that the larger Turbo fins are a great improvement in the effort-to-speed ratio. Getting the proper pedal stroke is very important too. You will find that a 90% stroke is comfortable and sustainable for a long time. But the Mirage drives can give you a good workout, if that is what you are after.

Why Turbo fins aren't a standard option on Hobies, I don't know. If somebody came up with a good cause to donate standard fins to, I bet NWKA could come up with 200+ pairs overnight.

UPDATE:
Wife got really sick and threw a wrench in the whole Kayak buying thing on Sunday.

BUT.....I bought them today! Blue Oasis (kid picked it out), and a Yellow Outback -figured I would go with good visibility one for being out fishing and what not. Make the Coast Guards job easier. ;D

Delivery on Wednesday.

And so.......we wait.
