Don't get me wrong, I love Elk, and I think I was talking it up this weekend.  But the thought just occurred to me before I typed that last post ... "why do we need to go all the way to Elk, when we can have a similar experience here?".

Allen,

I actually like the idea of doing our own tournament, I just don't know enough about the logistics of trying to do this on the Oregon Coast.  Samuel H. Boardman State Park just north of Brookings, OR looks like it has lots of nice habitat and some protected launches but no camping.  Harris Beach State Park about 6 miles south of there however does have camping but a less then spectacular looking shoreline.

Maybe Coosbayyaker or Boxofrain has some ideas for Southern Oregon sites.

Besides, my chances of making the Elk signup now that I only check NCKA about once a day are pretty slim.  I was thinking I'd have to pull the old "inaugural Elk champ" card with Sean to help make the cut.

hmmm, I was actually thinking about this recently. Having a small tourny at Sunset Bay here in Coos Bay. About as friendly an ocean launch as you can get, camping right there at Sunset. Lets do this thing!!
See ya on the water..

Or have it a different weekend and invite NCKA guys up.

There was a small derby last year at Harris Beach in Brookings.  7 kayak anglers showed up ... none of them from here.  I had emailed one of the guys who was in that at some point.  They limited out pretty nicely from what I heard.  I don't know that area, but I'm sure boxo can set us straight.

Roy,

That sounds pretty good.  One of the nice things about Elk is that that area receives very little fishing pressure (it's miles from the nearest boat launch).  I guess I'd like to hit up some area that was kayak access only (i.e. virgin fishing grounds) if I could.  Baring the abilitiy to find that, Sunset Bay does have everything else I might want.

Allen,
Brookings still sounds good to and a weekend different then Elk would be preferred just in case I can make it to Elk after all.

OR would be a lot easier for me to get to, than Elk.

I thought of Sunset Bay, too; my folks go there and have told me stories about it.

Northern OR has some nice habitat that's far enough away from ports that few boaters harass the fish. The stretch from Manzanita to Seaside has good rock gardens and a couple of parks for camping. It's also even easier for me to get to, than Southern OR. ;D

That would be a good compromise for the WA folk.   How protected are the launches in that area?

I guess it would be good to look into potential group camp sites in the areas so far mentioned.  Then again, if our turn out is going to be a dozen or so guys a few regular campsites might be fine.

way plenty areas and fish here in Curry County.
Harris Beach is Ok but not that great.
Camping may be be an issue. however, I know the major landowners here and some have riverfront property along the lower Chetco within 1/2 mile of the mouth. Do not let the looks of no campsite scare Ya'll away. Several campgrounds are RV friendly with cabins as well. May be able to snag a group rate from one or the other.
This week, a nice lady pulled in a 40+" ling and many are caught daily when you can get out.
The surf Perch do not leave this area all year long and the bite is on at most any beach with 6" of water.LOL!
from the Winchuck River mouth all the way to Gold Beach...if you can get yer boat to the water, you can catch fish....it's all near shore reef's ;D

why does this seem like De ja Vue ?????

I don't really think it gets that much pressure, not close in. The primitive launch  at Sunset can only handle small boats and alot of boats don't go over the bar. The charter boats go out to deeper water..
See ya on the water..

The north coast is great for camping but not so great for launching and landing.  I've spent the last 20 years surfing the entire north coast and the closest things to protected launch sites are the river mouths or Pacific City.

It can be tough- I've been on the coast when you couldn't get out on a charter boat because the wind was screaming, for days. :(

However, Tillamook Bay, Nehalem Bay and the lower Columbia are good backups.

The potential launch sites that I'm aware of are: Oswald West State Park; Smugglers Cove/Short Sands Beach. A surfing area, but I've seen it doable at either end. Big SW exposure, but protected from NW swell. Just S of Cape Falcon, which is the boundary for salmon, this summer. (N of the Cape for salmon.)

Indian Beach, in Ecola State Park, N of Cannon Beach. Similar exposure as Short Sands. Shorter haul to the water. North side of Tillamook Head, of Sunset Blvd, N side of Ecola State Park. Since it's on the N side of the Head, it's protected from SW swell, but exposed to the NW. A year or two ago, someone actually posted about launching here.
