Is this a good anchor for rivers like the Skagit?  Feels like its around 10lbs.  Got it from SWMBO's uncle.

Yep.throw a short chain on it and it will work a lot better.

I'd run it without. 10 lbs is plenty. That should work well on sand or gravel. On a rocky bottom though you may get hung up. I had very sad when I lost my free anchor :(
