After catching a big ZERO salmon, like everyone, at Drano Lake yesterday until 6pm, I decided to try the morning incoming tide off the Gilbert River boat ramp. The water was very muddy for about 100 yards then turned a nice green. 5 minutes after launching, this 31" lass decided my Kwikfish was tasty looking.

Although she didn't fight as hard or as long as I heard chinooks can, this is my FIRST EVER salmon and only my second fish from the kayak...following yesterdays massive 14" trout.

Yippeeee, there's hope for ALL of us newbies!!!!  :icon_cheers:

Very nice Jay.

I just saw this on IFish.net and the AOTY site then I checked here.. nothing.  I was getting ready to give you a hard time for not posting here first.   Glad I checked again.

Anyway, congratulations on the salmon, I really need to get out there myself.  Was your kwikfish wrapped or unwrapped?  What size 14,15?  Dropper lenth?  Leader length?  I want details.

Sorry I wasn't able to post all three at once.  ;)  Details....unwrapped, K15 i believe, trebles removed and replace with 3/0 1/0 combination, some old smelly jelly left on from the last time I tried, probably about 2-3 ft leader, probably about 1-2 foot dropper line to size 30 Jet diver. In case it isn't obvious, I don't pay much attention to how its rigged. Hmmm, maybe that's why this is the first salmon I've caught???

Sweet fish!  Way to make me resent my decision to spend another day fishing Drano.   :D

Way to go Jay!  Perseverance pays off--very nice fish and don't stop at just one.

Good job Jay.

Maybe I should try fishing the Multnomah Channel for no more than 30 minutes.  Seems like you either catch a fish right off the bat, or nothing for 8 hours.

Nice to see some action in there.

WHOOOOOO HOOOO!!!  :blob5: :blob9: :blob7:

Nice phish! Way to go Jay and get the stink waaay off the boat! Will you take $385?  ;D
But with the mojo you got going, you should charge twice retail just to rub it for good luck!
Was that a Chrome with Hot Pink tail Kwikfish? Maybe we should move Saturday's friendly competition to the Channel?

Wait, that was GBS with the stink on the boat (thats what I get for being vitutally here). Sorry.
You should let him rub your boat for free. ;D

Thanks for the encouragement Wali. I hope you're enjoying the warm sunshine down there. There was a new stink to the Big Game but it's long gone now. After the small trout at Drano on Sunday, This fish really got me motivated. I think you have the Kwikfish nailed, although there may also be a large amount of green on the top as well. I think it was the first lure I bought when I decided to add the dark side of gear fising to my bag of tricks. It only took a year to work out.  $385...I'm just getting a feel for this yak, not ready to sell quite yet. ;D  I'm pretty sure Scott will hit paydirt soon enough. It seems like right time, right place is the key with salmon.

What sunshine? I made town last night. Now I just got to finagle my way into a pass to join the Hawthorne fleet for the next three days! I am dying to take a grinning idjut picture with a Springer and downtown Portland in the background!

Oh, and if y'all really want to talk skunk, I have been fishing from a kayak in PDX since 2001 and still don't have any Salmonid blood on it. ::)

well, there were those dang suicidal smolts :'(

Welcome back!  ;D  Staying long? We never were able to meet after work before you moved. I'm almost ready to put the yak in the water after work, some place close to downtown with easy access for the Big Game.
