I have been making truck bed extenders for me and my friends i also have a toyota, but I put a tail light in them for a little added safety message me and I can whip you one up, I have all the steel here. I own a metal art business. To me the ones from hf seem to be alittle flimsy.
  Cheers.

be careful on having the kayak sticking out of the back a long ways.  I was informed by our local sheriff that mine was about 1.5ft too long to be legal.

I believe that the law says ( in Oregon) that anything sticking out of the back of a vehicle can only be 2/3 the width of your wheelbase, past the rear wheel.

Never heard of anything like that.  Just that if you have something stick out out the back you are supposed to put a red flag on it so other drivers know it's there.

ORS 818.080 covers size limitations:

Table II  (4) Last axle of vehicle operating singly ...............Any portion of
vehicle or any load thereon.............. Three fourths the length of the wheelbase of the vehicle.

So, multiply your wheelbase by 0.75, and measure that length from the rear axle. That is the maximum allowable length. My Ranger has a 125" wheelbase x 0.75 = 93.75", so I can carry a load that extends 7'9-3/4" beyond my rear axle, or approximately 4' beyond my dropped tailgate.

EDIT: I didn't include the headings from Table II, which clearly indicates that the point of measurement is the rear axle - just in case there is any question where the measurement should be taken from.

I was close.

Don't forget to measure from the axle (center of rear tire) and not from the tailgate.  It really sucks when you have a short box.

Quote from: Revised Code of Washington - RCW Title 46 Motor Vehicles - Section 46.44.034 Maximum lengths -- Front and rear protrusions
§ 46.44.034. Maximum lengths -- Front and rear protrusions

(1) The load, or any portion of any vehicle, operated alone upon the public highway of this state, or the load, or any portion of the front vehicle of a combination of vehicles, shall not extend more than three feet beyond the front wheels of such vehicle, or the front bumper, if equipped with front bumper. This subsection does not apply to a front-loading garbage truck or recycling truck while on route and actually engaged in the collection of solid waste or recyclables at speeds of twenty miles per hour or less.

(2) No vehicle shall be operated upon the public highways with any part of the permanent structure or load extending in excess of fifteen feet beyond the center of the last axle of such vehicle. This subsection does not apply to "specialized equipment" designated under 49 U.S.C. Sec. 2311 that is operated on the interstate highway system, those designated portions of the federal-aid primary system, and routes constituting reasonable access from such highways to terminals and facilities for food, fuel, repairs, and rest.

So in WA, it's 15' maximum behind the rear axel of your pickup.

Yeah, you're kinda limited on your long loads. They have a short bed with the axle really close to the cab.

I'm putting mine on for the tour of the pacific this weekend . I will take some pics, no welds, goes off and on with four bolts and I built it for under 100. Oh and a stunner of a paint job. That's all just build up.

I spent about $45 making this device out of 1.5" PVC and noodle foam.
PVC came from Home Depot and the foam came from the dollar tree.

The base and center rail are all glued and the outer support towers are not glued yet. this allows me to open them up and put the yaks in then push them together and support them. At some point I will put I-bolts in the top of the support poles so I can hold them tight.

Tying them down I use ratchet straps right now. I’m still looking for a better way but for now it works.
I have an 8' bed not counting my tailgate and only a couple feet hang over and I tie a red flag to the back of the Revo since it hangs out the furthest.
