I decided to try for some LMB this morning. Fishing was good but I didn't catch anything huge. The big ones followed me around in the shallows though. It was strange but I didn't mind. They were cool to look at.

Anyway, I got bored with the non-biters and decided to pedal across the lake and try a different spot. Half way across the lake I feel a snap crackle pop! Then my pedals feel funny. I pull the drive and find that the idler pulley is FUBAR. Sonofabitch!
I guess it's time to order some spare parts :(

A lot of drive failures lately... I'm starting to get nervous.  Are you a slow and steady pedal kind if guy or were you getting on it with short, quick and hard pushes?

It really depends on where I'm fishing. If I've got a long way to pedal to a spot I will kick it into high gear if I can't fish my way to the spot.  I am usually pretty easy on the drive. I mostly just pedal enough to slow my drift when fishing the salt.
I think I may have tightened the cables down too much. I noticed a couple weeks ago that the cable that goes through that pulley had come loose some how. So it is possible it just had too much stress working against the pulley and it finally gave way. That might explain the crack that you see in that picture.

Waxer's Surf and Skate. It's down here in Coos Bay. I went and talked to Brian and he gave me a new pulley for free. Problem solved :)

I broke mine last silver season.  I had an 8lb down rigger ball down and was booking it.

Ling ling, you may be right about over tightening the cables.   Their should be some play in them, about 1/8 inch or so when you squeeze them.  Not only will it reduce the chance of breaking the drive but it makes it easier to peddle too.

Here is a good link on drive maintenance.

I never noticed a difference in pedaling. Thanks for the link! I made sure it wasn't as tight this time. I ordered a couple spares just in case it happens again.

I'm kinda disappointed with this thread. I was expecting a song.....

When I woke up this mornin......
And the tide was just right......
I said, hey man let's go fishin....
Cuz I'm lookin for a fight.....

I went out in my boat....
To catch me some fish...
And as I was trollin...
I could just wish...
That the big one would bite....
But instead....
I heard a loud POP!!!!

As I look down....
I knew it weren't right....
And all I could think....
Was I'm done for tonight...

So now I've got the mirage drive blues....... Insert sweet blues riff here
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

Pretty clever indeed, all you need to do is to put it to music  :D
