For those that are unfamiliar with this index.  It is the Offshore Test Fishery index for sockeyes in Cook Inlet.  It's the single best gauge of when the WALL of sockeyes will hit our local rivers.

It used to be that anything over a hundred was great and 3 to 7 days later those fish would hit the rivers..  The best explanation on the web is found at:
http://www.alaskaoutdoorjournal.com/References/11OTFexplained.html

The index can be found at:

Time to get a plan for dipnetting ready!!  From a kayak???  I think I want to try it just once with a smaller net and our of the way.  I know Akfishergal mentioned giving it a try.  Maybe launch from the Ames bridge at high tide.  I'm looking for one or two fish.

Wouldn't want to launch at Kenai......way too many boats. Putting in at the bridge could be easy.

What is the predicted run size this year ?

And yes--a video would be a kick to see. Have fun with dippin...
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

I'm ready to give it a try!  I'm going to bring my net for traditional dip netting at the mouth, and my kayak for the fun of it. A couple of questions though ... Would kayakers be limited to the boat zone? Seems like we'd be sitting ducks if the answer is yes -- though I suppose I'd be much closer inshore than the average river boat. And secondly, how the heck am I gonna fit my Revo and my net on top of the Volvo? (wheels turning)

Hope so ... I'm on the north shore today. Will report back after I keep my net working through the falling tide.

Limit of 35 beauties in @ 2 hours; lots of doubles. Huge wall started about 30 minutes after high tide.

I will attest that CI is heating up. One of our customers bought a million pounds in the last few days. We wont be taking a day off anytime soon.
Big fish too. Seen H&G coming in over 9 pounds.

Here's the bulk of the haul -- needed two coolers to properly ice the fish after they were headed and gutted.  Compared to both the Kasilof and Copper River fish, they're huge.  I don't have any trouble seeing 9 lbs H&G on many of these.

Here's Dave making sure the tails are all clipped as we start evening out the load before heading back -- to a lot of processing over the next 24 . The fish cops were busy checking tickets, counting fish, checking for clipped tails and making sure nobody was taking home a King.  Actually, now that I think of it, this was the first year that I didn't see anybody net a King.

Yup. Fish are huge. Easy limit of nine fish with rod and reel. We did explode an eight weight sage...on a snag. Love the lifetime warranty. Lol. Hooked thirty over 2 hours, bonked 9.

It's on!!!

You're killing me Rudy! That sounds like way too much fun. Any fishing that has been described as 'the wall' sounds like a blast to me.
