Tried Lynne Lake, a STOCKED pond in Friday. Nothing.

Hit Whiskey Gulch from 2pm to 7pm Saturday. A dozen Irish lords so the bite was on. Lol. But otherwise completely barren. No jumpers for sockeye. No hits that even remotely seemed like a halibut.

I'm amazed how barren it is. I tried running down the beach at Deep Creek for three miles south. Didn't like the way my truck was handling the loose stuff so I decided to go to Whiskey Gulch. The silt line was all the way down by Deep Creek.

Hating this fishing without catching!!!  Aughhh!!!! Need to get back it!!!!

Wait...I thought Alaska was the land of abundance and all >:D

Seriously though, K84 you clearly know a thing or two about how to catch fish (an understatement!) so its only a matter of time before you'll be posting oodles of fish pics to make us all jealous.

Also your pictures of the scenery and wildlife are amazing in and of themselves. Keep at it and take lots of pictures...then post them here so we can live vicariously through them!

I've lost my MOJO!  lol.

This time of year is tough.  Even when we were running power boats, its a down time of year.  It's summer but it's too early for reds, the kings are a bust, and we still have a few weeks for silvers.  The Kings and halibut not showing really put a damper into my fishing.  The last few outings have been with kids or something new so I shouldn't complain.  But you'd think in Alaska the choices would be limitless.  I just need to go explore more.

hey Rudy,

Is the insanity your's   or the insane fishin.????
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

I hate to burst your bubble Rudy, but I went fishing out of WG and DC thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  The only day I didn't catch a limit worth of fish was Sunday.  Matt caught a good limit today though.

No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

Lol.  No bubble to burst here!  It's just this time of year we should be releasing a bunch of 5 to 10 pounders and keeping the 15 to 20 pounders.  I think I was more disapointed that I didn't see any reds jumping.  There's something like 4.5 million of them heading this way with good numbers already in the Kasilof.  The OTF index seems to show the fish are running further offshore than normal.  I guess I was using a third of a whole chum salmon for most of the day.  As soon as I switched to something more bite size,, I couldn't keep the Irish Lords off my hook.

I'm losing my focus a bit.  I've lost fish this year to gear failure and such that I have NEVER had happen in the past decade of fishing.  It's all a cycle.  A few decent days and we will get back in the groove.

Great job on the fish!!!!  It's always good to know they are out there!!!

Nice fish, KG -- was that from DC or Whiskey? I seem to do much better off Deep Creek, about 5 miles south of the tractor launch. Whiskey Gulch is synonymous with Irish Lords for me.  Its great appeal is the easy launch.

Nice.  Ok.  One more try for the reds.  I get what I deserve as far as the skunk goes.  I have committed to fishing big baits for at least half of the time out on the water.  I hacked up whole chums into thirds and was fishing them. so 3 to 5 pounds or more of salmon flesh!   I also used my crab jig which I was amazed the irish lords were picking up since its rather large.

I should have launched at Deep Creek.  I was 3 miles down the beach but couldn't find a decent spot to park and my truck was getting bogged down a bit in the loose gravel freaking me out a bit.

Did you notice if the silt line as down by Deep Creek?  Halibut I don't have an issue with but for the reds, I need clear water.

I can't believe you didn't see any jumpers on Saturday?! They seemed to be out there all day Saturday just south of the dc tractor launch. Sunday they disappeared of course until late afternoon.

When we were out Sunday I fished just about 1/2 mile further out from Andy but pretty much in line with him. I had 6 halibut on and he had zero.

The charter fleet seems to be doing great and they have been bringing back some hogs. But even though I have been 3 miles plus out I hardly see any boats. They must be fishing really far out.

Also I sure did mark a lot of bait balls.

Here's the pic of stomach contents of one of the 20 pound halibut I caught. He was stuffed! He had 3 pretty decent sized fish in him and a pile of crab

Here's my two. They weighed out at 20 pounds apiece.

Also get this....So as I'm getting ready for fishing at whiskey gulch yesterday I'm looking down at the beach and I see some people walking along and this little girl is dragging the daggerboard for my AI I lost there 3 weeks ago! I can't believe I got that back. That thing was 100 bucks to replace!

Also me and Andy did a drift thing Sunday. We launched at whiskey and drifted all the way to deep creek where we left my truck. Then we just went back to whiskey and got Andy's rig. Worked out great!

Nice job, Matt!  You guys seem to be getting it dialed in, and your improved range is starting to pay its dividends. And boy, there's some good kharma riding on that daggerboard reunited with you. I love the sound of your long drift, WG to DC.  That's the way to maximize those tides.  There's a nice small swing starting next Monday - Thursday, so I'm thinking of a return to Deep Creek then. This week, it's likely Sunny Cove for me on Thursday or Friday.

Prime time, gentlemen!

great info Matt!  Nice fish!!!!

I didn't see a single jumper and I could hear loons and otters splashing away for at least a half mile around me.  It was super still out.

I marked a few bait balls but not much.  I think Deep Creek is the better option for sure.  I think I just will get out a mile and not worry about driving too far down the beach.

Trying to take long weekends to get out but too many things going on!  We will see!!!!

I think the fishing is better farther out but remember you don't need to be a mile out anymore. That ended June 30.
