I've had a Collins M1942 machete since 1977. Take it backpacking whenever I go, been to Central America and back a couple times. It's a handy camping tool, an absolute necessity in the jungle, and the only "weapon" you can carry in many countries. Like they say "first thing a boy in Guatemala gets is a hat, second he gets a machete and then a pair of pants". I still use it for landscaping, digging weeds and minor home remodeling. Still straight and sharp. Too bad you can't get them anymore, maybe on eBay for $20. $200 for a machete, crazy.

I can forgive a Filipino for not knowing how to use a machete but if you don't know what Lumpia is then something's wrong.

In my thread jacking defense...I'm only half Filipino. Raised by my fully white mother. The extent of my Filipino culturedness is my friends calling me a dog eater my whole life.

Ling... Your first post about adobo made me laugh, your second made me frown. I love good adobo... I spent about 6 months in the Philippines (Santiago) when I was 16. Great experience. Kinda ruined me with some food... I like to know what I'm eating and who I'm dancing with now.

Ah man, best lumpia I ever had was from our sitter/maid in the Netherlands.  She wasn't a Dutch citizen yet, so she couldn't get any other job than under the table stuff.  She would always leave us a stack of lumpia in the freezer every time she cleaned the place.

The best way to eat dog is to kill it with your machete. Then cook it like carne Asada. My step bro and mother are Filipino. Lumpia. Yum

I'm ashamed to say that I know nothing about my filipino culture. I wish I could pipe in with sweet bush whacking pro tips passed down for generations. A white girl made me chicken adobo for the first time a couple of years ago...

If you liked the chicken adobo, you'll love the pork and chicken adobo!

Have you considered a brush axe?  I've blazed in miles & miles of gridlines & trails with one. Have had the same one since 2005. I cut the handle by a few inches & taped it hockey stick-style so it fit on the side of my pack just a bit better.

Just a suggestion. Doesn't look as bad-ass as a machete, but I find it more practical (& safer)

No.  And really, I'm looking for a machete.

General purpose hacking on anything and everything up to about 2-3".

The Book of Eli knife has a nice shape to it.  I could do without the holes drilled into it.

Low cost?  Don't forget to look around for your local army/ navy store or military surplus store. They might have just what you are looking for.

I used and lost my fair share of machetes when I was an avid waterfowl hunter. I picked them all up at the military surplus store.  Often had to do a bit of sorting to find the good ones but the price was always right.

+1 on the Ka-Bar.  You will only be slightly disappointed in the sheath.  The unit itself is a great tool.
