Sunday July 21st:  The baitfish aren't as thick offshore this year as they have been in years past.  Normally you'd follow the bait balls to find salmon.  It's a bit more hit and miss but with the expected record return of fish, when it's hit, IT'S HIT.

The beauty of fishing with the same guys year after year is that you no longer need to plan everything to a T.  Everybody simply confirms where they'll be fishing and the patterns established in the past guide the rest.

The ocean was suffering a bit of morning sickness at dawn.  Stained brownish red with low visibility.  The 1st 2 hours were paddling practice watching charter, private and commercial boats fail uniformally.

Around 8 we decided to head north in search of cleaner water.  Good call!  On a stretch of dark green water Kykfshr's rod went off.  FISH ON!  15min later my rod burries.  FISH ON!  Trolling back across the same patch Rawkfish's rod lights up.  FISH ON!

As we paddle over to witness the rodeo I see a blue shark roll on the surface between us and Rawkfish.
"SHARK!"
"What?"
"Blue shark"
"Oh crap!"

Rawky is in luck.  No attempt is made on his fish.

In the end we picked up fish on both herring and coyote spoons not more than 200yrds off the beach.  All gear was run shallow.  10 pulls and 3 to 4 oz of weight with flashers.

In the early morning, you'll find salmon just outside the waves of nearly every beach in Oregon and Washington.  Go fishing!

Very cool!  Nice job fellas.

I'm kinda curious to see how the big tides this week affect the fishing.  I know it's generally a good thing in the bays.....

What a great report! I can't wait to get out and try my luck. This will be my first year catching salmon from a kayak. You have me all giddy with excitement! Did rawkfish happen to capture any video of the trip?

Well done guys! The salmon have been pretty elusive for me and my kayak this year. So far only one native fish.
