New here, and new to the concept of kayak fishing. It looks fun, and is a relatively cheap way to get away from shore fishing. I'm looking at getting yaks for both the wife and I this winter to use next summer. Nothing has been decided on yet, and I'm basically here to learn for now.

We've both been in Alaska over 40 years (pretty much our whole lives), and we fill the freezer every summer for winter food. Our main targets will be salmon and rockfish I imagine, with halibut and lingcod as possibilities depending on where we go. We would be fishing mostly close to major harbors within driving distance of Anchorage, particularly Whittier, Seward, and Valdez. Very good possibility of some lake and stream fishing as well.

Anyway, like I said, I'm here researching and may ask for advice and wisdom from everyone else.

 :)

Welcome ArcticADX. Great place for info!!!

All sorts of comparative info and helpful folks with tons of experience.

Just be forewarned this kayak fishing thing is addictive!!!  Other than lingcod, all the other species have been a blast so far!!!!

  Welcome to the madness ArcticADX,
There is a growing number of your neighbors here on NWKA. Tap into their knowledge, their expirence, and their warmth for sharing .You'll be glad you did.
And pay heed to Kard's warning-----wise man --that Kardinal84.

What do you do on the slope ? Great place to work. Looking forward to getting back up there.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Welcome to the addiction.....Kayak fishing in AK is fun (a major understatement).

Biggest piece of advice you can receive for up here....invest in the best possible safety gear you can.  In the long run its cheap life insurance.  After you get that stuff, then have fun picking your yak, rods, reels, and other gadgets and doodads.
No matter how many times the PB's tell me I'm nuts....I still smile every time I out fish them

Hi ArcticADX and Mrs. Arctic ADX -- we're glad you found this site. Kenai_Guy has good advice up there. This should be a fun year for you to get geared up and start imagining all the excellent fishing opportunities you'll find afloat next year.

Dry suits, essential gear. Well-fit PFDs too. VHF radios for each of you. As you finish out this season with some shore-based fishing, keep you eye out for sit-on-top kayaks equipped with rods and nets. Chances are good you've found one of us, and we'd like to meet you.  I love that our Alaskan numbers are growing, and with it our knowledge base of accessible waters, trips, techniques grows too.

Welcome!
