Hi everybody. I'm new to the Portland area and as you have probably guessed, since I'm visiting this forum, I have a kayak. I'm still relatively new to the whole kayak fishing and have only done it a few times but found it a blast!!! I would really like to meet more kayak fisherman around the area and want to find a buddy that can show me the ropes fishing the area, especially springer fishing around the area! This last springer season, I was able to catch some springers on the Columbia on a friend's boat but would really love to try hooking into one on my kayak. Would anybody be kind enough to show me the ropes and help me figure out the sport and show me around???? Any help would be really appreciated!  :)

Ciao,

Welcome to Portland!  There have been a number of new kayak fisherman from the Portland area to this area/site lately and I'm one of them.  Have been out about 6 times looking for springers, but haven't been blessed with one yet.  Do some research on this site and you'll see some stories of other chasing these chrome demons.  Some more successful than I.

Kayak "friendly" spots I've tried are Gilbert River Boat Ramp on north side of Sauvies Island (aka Multnomah Channel), Cedar Oaks Boat Ramp in West Linn (Willamette), Drano Lake in the Gorge (Columbia River) and even launched downtown Portland near the Burnside bridge (Willamette).  Seems most folks are using either Cut Plug Herring or trolling Kwik/Flat Fish etc.

Seems to me that the best bet is to put out a date, time and place you want to fish, and ask for company in the Oregon Forum.  Seems to work about 1/2 the time.  I think I'm out this weekend, else I'd go also.

Good luck and keep in touch with us all on this board.

Like Scott, I'm one of those that has just taken to yak fishing. I was lucky enough to pick up a Multnomah Channel springer on my 2nd trip :occasion14:, but nothing since then. I've been trolling kwikfish and spinners. Coming from a fly fishing background, all this gear is new to me so I've been learning a lot recently.

This is a good group of people. Everyone here is very willing to help and answer questions....just be careful of actually taking some of the advice though  :D

Welcome to NWKA ciao. Try to search and read around the site and I'm sure you'll find lots of really good information that's specific to your needs. And when you have some time, try to hook up with some people and get on the water. You learn a lot really fast.

Welcome to the madness!
