A 2-3 ounce crescent sinker (depending on tidal exchange) with bead chains is the ticket. Most of the water in front of Chambers Bay ranges from 40-90 ft until you hit the drop off.

Can't help you with the Herring question as I've never launched from Pt Defiance...that's a long peddle/paddle from Chambers Bay.

Hobie Outback x2 (for fishing)
WS Tsunami 140 (for paddling, wishing I were fishing)
Old Town Dirigo 120 (for rivers)

I agree... gonna launch down closer to chambers but on the way down was gonna stop at pt. defiance bait shop and get like 1-2 dozen herring since theirs is fresh and kickin when they sell it to ya... also did some searchin and found that they charge $6dz which sounds high but I think its ok for such fresh bait... cant wait to head out there on Tuesday and maybe ill see some of you out there

You might want to try Narrows Marina as well down at the bottom of 19th...I thought they also had live herring??? Maybe not after Boathouse 19 went in. You might look there as well since it's not far away. Hella crab bait there in the way of flounder!

You could also stop at sportmans warehouse in federal way off 18th and 99 and pick up some there too...go all the way to the back center wall to the fridge
As of July 12th, I am, officially,  retired.

Narrows usually has live herring.  Good luck!!!  Lotta fish moving into the South Sound.  Got a 16 and 18.5# 3 days ago at Point Richmond.
