On my very slightly used 2013 outback i'm getting saltwater inside. I'm fairly sure it is from a leak, because my recent 8 hrs on the water was during a calm day with no surf launch... I've talked to other about the drive well cracking, and this has me concerned. How much water in the hull is expected?
Thanks!

I get a lot of water in my 2013 Outback, too. I don't think it's a leak. It's probably coming in through the rudder lines.

Are we talking cups or gallons?

My 2006 leaked like an SOB .... Upwards of 10 gallons an hour towards the end. The replacement 2013 hull is bone dry.

Take all leaks on a hobie seriously ... They only get worse.

You have a two year hull guarantee even if you aren't the original owner.

The rubber lines and the hatches leak. If you are pulling wet feet/legs up onto the area above the center hatch you will get some water in there. Also you will get some in the rudder lines. I'd say 1/2 to 1 cup is normal in calm conditions and maybe 2-3 cups in conditions with more swell.

It was in the 1/2 cup range.  To me 1/2 cup is more than there should be. But Wow for fuck sakes 2-3 cups seems excessive to me unless you are stuck in the middle of a typhoon.
Thanks for the info, it will hopefully prevent the headache of dealing with sending it  back...

Yeah, 1/2 cup is likely just splashing in through the hatch.

At this year's ORC I drained about three cups of water out of the Outback...if my hull is leaky I'd love to have it replaced! I'm under warranty for a while. :)

I was standing and casting my fly rod so its likely that the middle hatch could have been the culprit... I'll have to figure out a better place to stand. I dont like standing on the outside diameter of the middle hatch. Maybe I'll try standing on the seat.

As the stern buries in larger swells the water will push through the rudder lines. ORC was a pretty good swell day. Flip coming in or going out and you'll have even more in there.

I wouldn't worry about that much water. A few cups aren't going to hurt anything.

Lol I drained about 2 cups of blood out of mine. Didn't know the center hatch was open when bleeding the cabezon.

Before I had my 2006 hull replaced it would be 1/4 full after 4 hrs on the water...very sluggish with that much water in it :o.

The leak started out slow but got progressively worse until I felt it was unsafe...and a huge pain in the ass.

:) I bet that smelled lovely.

I can tell you with certainty that you absolutely need the rubber seal around the twist hatch.  I take mine off and clean them to remove sand and dirt pretty often.  I headed out on a pretty rough day and realized when I got out that I had forgot to put those seals back in; by the time I came back in I had close to 5 gallons of water in there...made for a pretty interesting landing  :sad1:

Usually I have about a 1/2 cup at most inside the hull.

LIGHTLY lube the hatch seals with some food-grade clear silicone grease.  Did I mention LIGHTLY loudly enough?

Smear some on the inside surface of the hatch ring, the surface the gasket seals against.

Smear some on your fingers and rub it on the gasket. If you see anything on the gasket that looks like grease you used too much. It will help with operating the hatch and will help seal it too.

I've never gotten much water in my Revo and leave a sponge inside the hull.  Occasionally there will be enough water in it to squeeze out. Usually from leaking through the hatches in rough water or splashing water into the cockpit or during the after action freshwater rinse.

I also grease the rudder cables at their pass-throughs.  I can't tell for certain whether it helps repel water from entering, but it hasn't hurt.
