Here's a Gee Whiz question for all you OG saltwater guys:

I have heard that halibut are occasionally caught near shore around here.  Would it be worth it to troll a herring along the sand bottom while paddling out to an offshore haystack for lings?

What's your opinion?

Yeah, gotta agree. If it works out for you, always keep something in the water. That bumps up your chances of hooking up w/ something.

We get the Ca. butts that come in very shallow and lay between the rocks in the sand.
Many are caught just past the surf line.
But alas, no biggies way down here much, maybe one or two a year hits the paper.

Judging by the NOAA charts, it could be as deep as 120'.

Spot, I've had 2 halibut hookups (landed 1 @ 40#) in 1 day, in 90-120', just off Cannon Beach. We were fishing near the boilers, for lings and rockies, and when we drifted off I would bounce my jig on the sand bottom. ;D

Sweet looking Hali PS. Hope I can nail one of those soon enough. How and where did you get the one that's on your avatar?

That's exactly what I needed to hear.  You weren't far away from where I am thinking of doing this.  Anybody interested in joining me when the ocean calms a bit?

Hey Spot,

I'd be up for joining you for some salt.  Just let me know when.

BTW, how's this Saturday forecast look to you?  I'm not familiar with what is considered calm around here.

:o  I'm never going to fall asleep now......

Dang, that's not the same report I saw this afternoon!  Saturdays can be a trick but I might be able to pull it off.  I'll let you know tomorrow.
Of course Saturday is still 3 days away.  Plenty of time for the forecast to change to 11ft at 7 sec with a 20 KT NW wind.  :-\

Pisco, what time of year was it that you caught that Hali off Cannon Beach?

I've heard that they don't come inshore to spawn until later in the summer, maybe June or July? I don't know myself but this is from pretty knowledgable fishermen.. That being said, can't hurt to try.
See ya on the water..

Z- The fish in my avatar was caught at Neah Bay several years ago, the first time I fished out of my rowboat. If I remember correctly, I posted a "First Blood!" report on NCKA. ;D I was bouncing a 8oz jighead, with a teaser.

CBY- the Cannon Beach fish was caught in late June; off the Siggi G http://www.siggig.com/

Spot,

Here's the updated forecast as of 8:41 this morning.

Quote
SAT
S WIND 10 KT...VEERING TO W IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES
1 FOOT. W SWELL 4 FT. CHANCE OF RAIN.

Still looks good to me, but I'm well aware of how fickle these forecasts can be.

My friend Jim (new member "InSeine" on this board) is in town this week and we'll probably hit the Willamette or MC on Friday for some salmon/sturgeon/smallmouth/largemouth/walleye/panfish potluck ATOY point building and we're hoping to follow that with some ling/rockfish/cabezon/halibut points on Saturday.   The plan is to garner about 1600 points by Sunday. ;D  ;)
