OK guys here it is, the tournament website is up and running. Click the picture to sign up.

October 19th is going to be the last time in the foreseeable future that we will be able to retain sturgeon in the Portland area so don't miss out.  Even if you have never fished for sturgeon this is a great way to learn how to safely target them from a kayak while hanging out out with a bunch of old and new friends.    And don't forget all the proceeds from the tourney go to the Portland HOW Chapter.

Couple things.

The longest fish doesn't have to be it the retention slot?

I'm pretty sure this date is wrong.

Good catch on the date.  Just ignore that for now.  I will see if I can get that fixed, because hopefully Jake is enjoying his day off.

Yes, photos of oversized fish can be submitted, because we don't want to penalize anyone for hooking a monster.  If you catch an oversized sturgeon please photo and release as quickly as you can. DO NOT take the fish out of the water or drag it to shore so you can get a better picture.  We will accept head shots or action shots over oversized fish.

Everyone, please let me know if you find other errors or have problems signing up so we can fix them ASAP.

Thank you for putting this together, fun for a good cause.
Not that I need to worry about this but;
How do the biggest fish get decided?  Is it based on retained fish or biggest over-sized that are measured/photo'd?  This could dictate tactic and locations.

Thank you.

Very good questions!  Nate?

To me the rules read like it's the biggest over-sized that is measured/photo'd. I assume if no oversize are caught then the longest legal fish wins. It's going to be awful tricky to get a good measure/photo of an oversize sturgeon. I think the "must fish with partner" rule is probably a pretty good one for this reason.

+1. sorta.
I think the fish must be hooked, and brought boat-side by yourself, however I vote to allow others to help position the fish for a decent photo. An oversized sturgeon is tough enough to maneuver even when tired. I would rather have a good, clear shot of a perpendicular fish having more than one person help with the photography, than a single head shot of a sturgeon perpendicular in the water because the fisherman could not handle, position, and photograph all by their lonesome.

I totally agree, fwiw.

Doesn't say anything about excluding motorized kayaks or under sail, or even "mother ships" Theres could be a lot of water to cover...Then anchor. :-\

Personally, I think that any entered fish should be in the keeper slot.

Save the oversize tournament for a day when the river isn't completely nuts with people trying to catch their last dino ever.

Motorized kayaks and the like won't have much of an advantage.  There are a lot of good holes just a few strokes away from access points.

Agreed!
I like to move to other spots though if I don't like the action where I'm at. But yeah... Got an anchor to keep me on spot. You might even venture to say the playing field is evened up between peddlers vs. paddlers!

These events are fun for anchor hopping.  You get to hang out with old friends, meet new friends and move spots within an area easily.  My luckiest spot always seems to be wherever deepcolor's buoy is.

I can hold up to 3 people.  If you see me out there (any of y'all) feel free to clip in to my buoy.

For Oversized fish only, what about a circumference measure behind or right at the back of the head, in front/behind gills, etc..  Or a straight line measure from nose to end of base of "head" over the top of the skull as a starting baseline measure that is "easier" to get from a yak then full body and should be  fairly equitable to the size of the actual monster.

This sounds like fun.  A chance to chase sturgeon from the kayak and a good cause too.  Hope I can make this one -
